Meeting Demonstrated Financial Need

I was just wondering what I can expect when it comes to universities meeting demonstrated financial need at large schools

Demonstrated financial need is about $15,000 at most schools I am looking at, out of state student

Specifically looking at Mizzou but would like to know for other large schools in general

Thanks for any help

Most public universities only give need based aid to in state students. There are a few that give need based aid to OOS students, but they are quite selective. Some give merit to OOS students, or will give in state tuition to higher stats students.

You comment that you have $15k of need is confusing, since the price of colleges varies a lot. Also, meeting demonstrated financial need is strictly based on the college’s definition of your need, not your definition.

Do you know about the net price calculators on each college website? What is your home state?

Missouri does not guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. Did you run the net price calculator on the Mizzou website? Really that is the best way to get at least an estimate if your potential net cost.

What do you mean you “demonstrated financial need is $15,000”. Your need would be based on the cost of attendance which varies from school to school.

What is your FAFSA EFC?

Sorry for the confusion, I updated the post to say demonstrated need is about 15k and the schools I am looking at (Mizzou, Nebraska, Alabama). The price calculator at mizzou asks very general questions and doesnt really give a specific answer. Thanks for the help though! Cost is about 28k after merit scholarship and EFC is about 13k.

Well…if your EFC is $13,000 then that is the least you will be expected to pay.

Your EFC does not put you in line for any federally funded grant money. You will get a $5500 Direct Loan.

Are you a strong student? Maybe you will get merit aid from Mizzou…or Alabama. Your $13,000 family contribution plus your $5500 Direct Loan will cover $18,500…any chance your stats would put you in line for guaranteed merit at Alabama?

Are you instate for any of these places?

Yeah sorry I am really focusing in Mizzou where I got a mark twain scholarship that waives the out of state tuition fee (COA 44 to 28k). On the website there is an MU grant for OOS showing financial need for up to 5000 but I dont know if I show enough need

What are your stats?

OOS publics usually do not give need based aid to OOS students. They charge a higher price because your parents don’t pay taxes there. Wouldn’t make much sense to charge a higher price to OOS students and then give away need based aid.

However, some of those schools give large merit.

What are your stats and how much will your parents pay each year?

Looks like you received…

MU Grant

Upcoming Deadlines
February 1
This institutionally funded, need-based grant is awarded to undergraduate students showing significant financial need. To be considered for this grant, students must meet the Mizzou priority deadline for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be eligible, students must be an undergraduate student working toward their first bachelor’s degree.

Award amounts, which range from $100 to $5,000, are based on need and hours enrolled. If the student takes fewer credit hours than required for full-time enrollment, the award will be reduced prior to any disbursements. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid for additional information regarding award adjustments.

MU also offers merit-based and need-based scholarships.

Your EFC is about $13k, so yes you have “need” if after merit and Student loan and Work study , you still have about $20k to pay.
