I am visiting a pretty selective college next week and have managed to arrange a meeting with a professor in their International Business program (this is what I really want to major in college). The school is my number one choice.

Im starting to get nervous, for those of you who have had meetings with professors, what does it usually involve? What should I ask? Who should do most of the talking?

I really don't want to come across as a person that dosent talk, but i really dont know what to say, i mean im really intrested in International Business, so should i just stick to that?

Also should I bring a resume, or is that a little weird?

are you going to be visiting one of his/her classes as well? I sat in one of my person's lectures before meeting with her afterwards for about a half hour back in her office... I guess it helps you get an idea of the professor's personality and what he/she does. You can always ask about classroom environment and things about the student body, using some of the observations you make while in the lecture

I didn't bring a resume to mine, since (at least in my opinion) the meeting's supposed to be more about you learning about the school. A resume just made me feel like admissions were on my mind

I more or less went through broad questions about academic atmosphere and things my professor liked about the school. Stuff about undergraduate internships, summer work, etc. Fortunately my person was talkative enough to keep things going as long as I kept chiming in with a couple of questions...

anyway those are my random bits and pieces of advice

My daughter made a point of meeting a professor at each school we visited. I think most of them were flattered by the attention. They loved talking about their researches, classes, etc. My daughter did not bring any additional information (resume) with her. She did do some research about them before each meeting. She always approached as - 1) tell me a about your department, 2) I think I would like to go into ___, do you think your department would be a good fit for me, 3) how are the students? 4) have you taught at other schools, if so, how do they compare. A few of those professors actually wrote some nice things about her to adcom.

Just ask whatever you want to know. A meeting with a professor is a chance for you to evaluate if that college is really the place where you want to spend the next four years of your life, nothing more.

Don't assume that the meeting will help your application. Don't bring a resume - the professor really won't care.
