I previously made a thread in the Washington University board about how unsupportive my parents were, and here's the second round.

Today I received my acceptance letter to Georgetown along with the Financial Aid Award. My financial aid award is estimated (still haven't sent in my taxes) to be $39,000, including a $34,000 University scholarship. I should be happy, right? Wrong! My parents aren't even thinking about letting me go visit! I was also accepted to USC, and they'd prefer it if I'd go there (seeing that it's in state), but I just really want to go out of state and I'm so ****ed right now. My parents have always been concerned about money, yet GU is offering more than USC, and their still not letting GU be an option. Their excuse is the award wasn't final. I don't know if there's anything to discuss, just wanted to rant for awhile.

Later

once it's final, i'm sure things will work out for the best. lol, my efc was 39000 and my parents didn't even say congratulations when i told them i got in.

yeah, my mom was sweet to my face about Georgetown while telling people behind my back that even if I got in I'd never go because she didn't want to pay for it.

You just have to be firm- it's slightly irrational of your parents to turn down that much money. Just try and talk and argue your point calmly.

i'm really sorry melloncollie but im sure ur parents will come through! and in the end its ur future ur decision.. she should let u decide... :) good luck!

First, sympathy...

Next: where there's a will there's a way...looks to me like your Georgetown scholarship covers almost all the cost....$39,000 out of $42,000 or so? Plus travel to & from California...that means you need around $5000 total...not so bad...you can get a student loan (w/out your parents!)...an idea to consider...there are also lots of jobs here in the DC area...you could easily earn $5000 working this summer and part-time during the school year, if you don't want to think about a loan...

But as a parent, I suggest you talk "hard" w/your folks about the real reason they're against G'town...if it really is money, see above paragraph--it's very "solve-able"...if it's distance or a sense that G-town would be a bad choice for you, it's a whole different thought process you need to go thru in making your decision.

You know, us parents are human, too...I know my son has been accepted to four great schools (including G'town) and one of them I irrationally and w/out good reason simply despise. And I'm paying for 100% of his college costs. You have no idea how tempted I am to simply tell him I won't pay for it. He says the 4 are equally attractive to him...so what would be the big deal for him to rule out the one I hate? I assure you, this is a major struggle for the human me--it's easy when I look at it as a parent, but very very hard when I'm just feeling it as myself, a human being...

Hopefully, I will stick to my guns and conquer my bad reaction to that one school--which currently is the one he is leaning toward attending...it IS his decision, and the money to pay for it has been accumulating in a college savings account since he was first born. He is entitled to decide on that school (which is a perfectly fine school, mind you)...

I tell the story only to perhaps make you feel a bit better about your folks...they love you; they want what's best for you; it will "kill" them if you're unhappy...so be calm, explain how badly you want to go to G'town; present them w/your plan on how you'll pay for it...I'll bet you (except I shouldn't encourage gambling!) they come around.

In any event--the best of luck to you, and congratulations on your accomplishments...you should be hugely proud...

Yeah melloncollie, if Gtown is where you want to go, and you have the finaid package to back it up, don't let your parents stop you. You should certainly talk to them about it, but ultimately the decision is yours to make, and yours alone. Congratulations on getting in and getting that awesome finaid package, and hopefully we'll see you on the Hilltop next fall.

For travel, it's all about the Jet Blue. I don't know where you live, but they fly out of John Wayne and Lindbergh...and maybe even LAX but I don't know about that one. I got a round trip to DC for $129.
