I didn’t do as much as I wanted my first semester of college and I’m looking for a sense of community so I’m looking to join a male org at UT. I’ve considered frats but the guys seem too superficial/ just care about partying. The old threads talk about the big ones being Tejas, Blazers, Texas Wranglers, Hellraisers, and Iron Spikes.
I looked through some old threads but couldn’t find much useful information so I appreciate your help.
If you’re looking at spirit groups then just know the different reputations of each.
Tejas, more of the intellectual types but you could be going to their meet or greets or ‘coffees’ for upwards of a year without knowing if you’re getting in or not. Very sorority like. They have a house though which is rare for spirit groups and places them higher in the eyes of the university.
Iron spikes have a bunch of cool guys who enjoy the social scene and their pledgeship takes the route of an easy version of Wranglers pledgeship. However, the spikes may be on watch after the university’s investigation into them for hazing allegations this past year so they may be at risk.
Texas Wranglers is a group filled with a bunch of athletically oriented guys who put an overall emphasis on breaking past their limits. This can be seen by their pledgeship or ‘mavericks’ which consists of special forces work outs and various other requirements. And with Wranglers just winning recent awards of the most outstanding organization on UTs campus and being the only other spirit group with Tejas with a house. It seems as if they’re on the way up faster than the other groups.
My roommate who I knew prior to college is one of the Wrangler pledges and he seems to enjoy it. He was going to go greek with me but decided against it due to the costs, although they seem like they throw a good amount of events for the amount they pay. The dudes in his PC are pretty cool too, honestly seems like a bunch of engineer/STEM guys who work out and are pretty chill. I’d suggest at least checking out them along with the other spirit groups if you don’t want to go greek.
The only other group I’ve encountered is Tejas cause their house is in west campus, close to ours. They seem like cool guys as well. I can’t speak for the other groups because I don’t know any of them, but spirit groups seem like a good alternative if you want to spend the $$ to be in a frat.
