Can anyone tell me information about spirit groups?

im guessing its like a fraternity minus the rushing/pledging process.

This links to two useful past threads.

Wrong, pierrechn. They’re like fraternities and sororities WITH the rushing and pledging. They’re in a way more exclusive without the respect if that makes sense. For guys, you have to do certain things to get into say, Tejas. I’ve heard that you have to keep coming around the house and hanging out until they ask you to join (Tejas is the only one with a house). The others like Wranglers have a pledging process.

For girls, you have to go through various interviews and fill out applications. Spirits requires you to do projects and depending on your creativity you get chosen (the first round is a project but the finalists are chosen without them knowing who you are). Spirits is the most respected spirit group as well.

They spirit clubs are like sororities without a national affiliation but it is very nice that you don’t need to have letters of reference from alumni. They do have pretty particular try-outs during their “pledge” periods.

Let me once again put in a plug for Alpha Phi Omega, the co-ed service fraternity that drops down the giant flag of the state of Texas from the tower at Gone To Texas, takes the flag out onto the football field at home games and (sometimes, like this year) National Championship games, runs Red Cross blood drives, had has quite a few fun events every semester. Anyone who is willing to participate in their community service projects is welcome to pledge and join. This is a nice way to get involved on campus and meet students from other majors and and meet upperclassmen who can give you good advice. Yearbook, newspaper, band, and Student Union committees are great, too. :)

That’s good to know, MidwestMom, I wouldn’t know that it was them if it wasn’t for you… seems like they’re definitely worth looking in to.

You can learn about Alpha Phi Omega co-ed service fraternity and the other clubs and organizations at Party on the Plaza 2010. (There is already a facebook group with this name.) This is the biggest UT “activity fair” of the year, a week after school starts.

Plan to go and check out all of the organizations. There are so many great ones.
