Mental health issues -- Terrible semester

Near the end of the spring semester I had, for the first time, incredible and debilitating outbursts of anxiety and guilt which have been partially attributed to OCD. By the time I was able to get treated (find the suitable med combo) and get it under control, the damage had been done.

I got a 1.5 GPA that semester, bringing me from a 3.20 to a 2.83. This GPA leaves me a fairly decent chance of getting into certain Bio majors at UCR (according to their counselors), but obviously diminishes my chances elsewhere. My GPA will improve by .11 solely by retaking a course that I got a D in.

At first, I didn't consider mentioning it on my app because I do not want to be judged. But the more I think about it, the more unfair it seems; very few people could have gone through what I did and not been affected by it. Should I mention it, and does it go in the Academic History section or the additional comments?

I should point out that I have had an upward trend since that semester (3.0 by taking Chem over the summer, and for this semester).

I appreciate any input. Thank you.

The only UC’s that read personal statements are Berkley, UCI, UCLA, and Merced. If your target school is UCR, I think you can get in if you retake that class. As for the other UC’s…it depends on what you get this semester and how competitive your major is.

Interesting. I am retaking it right now and passing (Calculus)

I wasn’t thinking of putting it in the personal statement part though, I was going to put it in the academic history box. UCR told me that they only read statements to break a tie, but I’m surprised to hear that they don’t read them.

**Novalord2: Our life is a roller coaster; as crazy as that seems. I am sorry that you experienced that. However, you can most definitely turn it around! Of course you should write this on your application. As a matter of fact, it will help you out. Be true to your application. Don’t leave anything out! I hope you are feeling better &nd if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!
