mentioning trump in a UC insight question?

will it be overused or is it alright if i mention him? it involves my future career goals.

also, im having trouble writing prompt #2. the thing is, ive been involved with various art forms for years and its hard to have a short focused essay when there are about 4 different types of creative arts i partake in and am passionate about. i dont know if i should try to mention all of them or just focus on one or two… there is a story behind each one and i could talk for hours about how all of them have affected me but i cant seem to condense things down.

No, don’t. You may mention ‘future/potential national or federal policies’ if it applies, but nothing more.

Mention All four in the first sentence and how they’re related for you creatively, then indicate you’ll focus on two.

Given the viciousness and nastiness of the political campaign and the ongoing news, it may be more difficult for an admissions reader who disagrees with your political views on this particular subject to keep his/her political disagreement out of his/her evaluation, compared to other potentially political subjects.

normally i would never be political, because i respect people’s decisions. but there is literally no good reason to support trump so i cant see how it can be considered controversial. but yeah what im gonna discuss is about potential policies so i could just mention those without mentioning him by name.

so for the other essay it’s alright to announce “im going to discuss x and x”? i was just worried about whether i had to try to write artistically or something. im a lot more analytical/straightforward when answering questions…like repeating the prompt in my thesis statement. would that be alright?

Believe me, people in CA voted for him. Don’t do it.

Repeating the prompt in your thesis sentence is really middle school, IMO. Surely you can address the prompt without doing that. You don’t have to write artistically, just competently. I don’t know what the prompt is, but if it’s asking for two things, address two things. You say art, so: “A pencil and sketch pad can bring the dullest object to life, and a ball of clay can come alive once it’s in my hands. Both sketching and sculpting allow me to transform inanimate objects into something full of energy… blah, blah, blah.”

It is your life and you can do whatever you want with it, but you got a very good advice above. Don’t do it. Don’t assume that because California is a blue state the reader of your essay voted for democrats.

@otoribashi I think you got it…don’t mention Trump by name but not just because he’s a controversial figure but more importantly, you want to focus on what defines you and your views without relying upon something that is basically a current events topic. Who have you been over the last 4 years and what shaped your decision over this time period to pursue the major you are interested in? How do you anticipate your major will lead you to achieve your goals? write an impactful essay about you. Good luck!

-Don’t mention Trump
-For prompt 2, you said you’re passionate about 4 different activities, it’s perfectly fine to focus on one. It’s only 350 words so if you have that much to say, go for it. They just want to feel your passion and learn something about you. Pick your favorite and go with that. I disagree that you need to mention the other three activities in the first sentence, as long as they are listed in the activities section of your app.

@Lindagaf oh i am in no way into the fine arts lol (i do a lot of performing arts) but thank you for the example.

alright thank you for the advice everybody. ill try to keep it subtle!

I’d say that if you are very straightforward as a person, you should be straightforward in your writing. You shouldn’t try to be really artistic in your writing if that is not how you write normally. If you are planning to go into art, then your writing style may even set you apart. However, I’m still a senior in high school as well so I am in no means an expert on writing. Just my opinion.
