Mentorship program 2018

Just posted this on the AU RD 2022 as well. My daughter told me today that she knows of 3 other students in her school who were also invited to this same “select” program which comes with no aid for the privilege of a fall internship. Something tells me that there are many more than 150 students who received this select invitation.

@Daughter2018 - I looked over the materials and I think the wording is misleading. The invitation is to join a select cohort of 150 students… meaning they expect 150 students to actually take up the mentorship/Spring 2019 admission offer. It’s likely that they accepted more like 600+ into the program because many students (like my D) won’t accept it. I think AU admissions didn’t handle this very well - it’s fine to offer students Spring admission but the mentorship “offer” made my daughter feel she got a second class admission. She’s worked too hard in High School to go anywhere where she feels they won’t value her as a student. And my initial take on as a parent was that AU was trying to pad their profits by offering a boondoggle semester for which we parents would pay full price. I don’t think it’s that bad but the first impression wasn’t positive. I think AU should have started out with a big “Welcome to AU - you are admitted for Spring 2019” message and then baited the hook with a Fall semester trip to England or experience working in DC.

I have to say, the whole process has been disappointing. Too much game playing – 'show us how bad you really really want to come here, so we can say that everyone we offer admission to accepts". When I look at the stats of who was accepted, who was waitlisted who was declined, it seems very arbitrary.

I am a parent of a student who was invited to participate in this program. We went to visit last week. I feel that you will be part of your class of 2022. I don’t think there will be any difference between you and the others in the class of 2022. It seems great to me actually, you will have an internship under your belt early. Not sure my son will be going there, but I hope he does. At this point the ball is in his court.

I suggest Washington over Bath, unless you really know you want to study abroad right away,

When I asked they said that they have a limited amount of freshman they can accept. I am certain that those who were solid candidates with lower GPA or boards were offered January 2019 instead of September 2019 for maintenance of pretty statistics.

My son and I went to visit. It is the real deal.
