I got this thing in the mail telling me to apply for this mentorship program. It looks kinda cool, I guess. Has anybody done it? Is it worth it? Are there any strings attached that I don't know about?

Unless you're extremely shy/not sociable, or are really worried about the stress of schoolwork, I personally don't think it's that necessary. The basic goal is to give people who really need help at least one person they can go to,for everything from course selection, getting around campus, adjusting to college life, etc. I don't think this has any strings attached to it, just a program to help people out. They'd basically function a lot like the non-freshmen who frequent this forum, except I guess you kinda get one assigned to you, and it's in real life as opposed to online. But I think most people who come here are well-adjusted enough to find people that can help them on their own, instead of being assigned one.

MY parents made me sign up for it and talked with me about all this networking ********.

As a member of the College of Engineering's peer mentorship program (which operates separately from the university's program at large), I thought it was a good thing to try and it's never a bad idea to have another person to ask questions before you even get settled in.

Manguo, its a fairly flexible program, and its a nice way to get to know some people you might not have otherwise. If it looks interesting...try it. If you decide you don't like it...drop...you won't hurt anybody's feelings.
