Mercersburg Academy VS Pomfret School

My DS has been accepted to both Mercersburg Academy and Pomfret School. This is our first year to apply to BS in America. We have our first choice, but we want to hear some thoughts from you guys. He is looking for challenging academics, and specifically loves math and science. Also, he is not really interest in sports, however, he interests in Photography.

We live close to Mercersburg Academy and my son applied as a day student. I will say that they are very heavy on doing something performance based every trimester. As a 9, 10, and 11th grader students have to do something performance related throughout the school year. Does your son have music, drama, a sport, something else that he is interested in trying out. I don’t know that photography alone will be enough and he will need to perhaps broaden his horizons. They have an amazing sports program and they also have quite the performing arts center. I know nothing about Pomfret but I would say he needs to look closely at the websites and see which EC’s fit better.

Thank you so much for your comment @jenarow

@jenarow Does “performance based” include sports? And the outdoor program?

DS was accepted at Mercersburg. Although we chose another school, we liked Mercersburg for its balanced Academics, Music, and Art programs. They also have outdoor programs. I am not familiar with Pomfret.
Mercersburg is easier to get to from out of state, about 100 minutes from Washington area airports (DCA. IAD, Baltimore.)

Pomfret, I believe, is rural and about 3 hours from JFK airport and 90 minutes from Boston.

The required after-school activities at Mercersburg include many sports, outdoor education (my son did rock climbing, but they have biking, hiking, and more under the umbrella of that program), theater (various tech areas and performance), dance, and community service.

yes, all of that, plus music, and other things. twinsmama did a great job explaining it.
