Does NYU offer merit aid? I took my daughter on the tour and one of the guides said that it’s entirely need-based and not merit, but the common data set lists NYU as giving merit aid. Also, we live in NYC so there is actually a scholarship listed on the NYU website for NYC students, but it’s not clear how to qualify, how many recipients, or how much the award is. Thanks!
@soozievt might be able to answer.
My understanding is that any merit aid at NYU is highly competitive.
NYU does give out a few scholarships - listed here: Scholarships
But they are very limited and extremely competitive, so for all practical purposes you can assume there’s no merit aid.
My daughter is a graduate of NYU/Tisch. She received a significant four year scholarship but I don’t see that particular scholarship on the list that was linked in this thread and so maybe that one doesn’t exist any longer but there are other ones now. Her scholarship was called the Trustee Scholarship. We were told it was a mix of merit and need.
She also got selected for something they have discontinued called Tisch Scholars which is not a monetary award but is a program with some special perks including free domestic and international trips she got to partake in.
In senior year, she got some additional merit scholarships.
She did not apply specifically for any of these things. They just were given.
D21 currently attends NYU. NYU overhauled their financial aid and scholarship policies starting with the 2021-2022 academic school year. It now meets 100% of demonstrated financial need and no longer awards general merit scholarships to incoming students based solely on merit, without financial need.
Merit scholarships for incoming students are actually “mixed” scholarships based on both merit and need. Scholarships will be automatically adjusted upwards if a family’s financial need changes in subsequent years.
My daughter did not qualify for financial aid but was offered participation in the MLK Scholars program (which used to be called the MLK Scholarship; I believe she checked a box on the application to be considered). MLK used to include a large merit scholarship for all scholars regardless of need, plus a free service trip, travel stipend and summer credits. My daughter was offered the trip, travel stipend and summer credits, but no scholarship. MLK Scholars with financial need still receive a scholarship.
