How good is NYU with their merit-based scholarships? Especially for ED applicants?
I’m interested in Stern if that makes a difference
take a look at this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1117221-parents-and-students-concerned-with-financial-aid-please-read.html#latest
the most important thing to take away from that is unless youre a top applicant, the chances of you picking up any substantial amounts of aid are very slim
There are no merit scholarships through Stern. The only university wide merit scholarship is the MLK scholarship for top students. Not sure how ED affects eligibility.
Is it necessary to apply for financial aid for scholarships? @jcswift13 @uskoolfish
NYU suggests that everyone apply for financial aid freshman year. Just to be in the system.
Our experience with scholarships and financial aid at NYU: Our daughter received many scholarships at NYU - some were not even applied for. Some were program specific - given to a few students in the program, etc. Don’t sell NYU short on the financial aid / scholarships… a last minute $4,000 for no reason whatsoever, not-applied for scholarship was one of many surprises.
@Emtou2u When do they usually announce the scholarship awards? Also, for NYU specific ones, where do you go to apply?
@NTXDad My financial aid information was updated at the same time as my admission decision.
@zuminskee I’ve heard over the past few years that NYU is generally very cheap; however, in my specific case, I was accepted ED1 for Stern and received a 65k annual scholarship out of a 71k fee. From what I understand, the post @jcswift13 linked is fairly accurate. NYU prioritizes financial aid for students who can’t afford an expensive college tuition but are academically desirable. If you think you can’t afford NYU but worked hard enough in high school, they’ll make ends meet for you financially.
And just a side note, I wasn’t considered a top tier student at my high school. Don’t worry about it too much; you’ve done all that you can at this point.
My experience with NYU scholarships was similar to that of @SternFinance2020. Applied to Tisch ED1 and received a full tuition scholarship, but my grades are mediocre at best and my test scores are only slightly above average. It all comes down to whether or not you paint yourself to be a good fit for the specific program you are applying to in your application or not. Good luck!
I didnt received any scholarship and I really needed to attend… I was pleased to be accepted
What qualifies a “top student”? My scores/GPA are pretty high but I haven’t recieved any scholarships.
Merit scholarships are a recruiting tool. Why would any school need to dangle cash in front of you to induce you to attend if you’ve already committed ED?
I’ll answer that- top students do their research - and so do their parents
If they find EDs don’t get merit money at NYU many won’t apply
We toured yesterday and loved it. Its good to know that there is merit money available
@GMTplus7 The ED agreement is nonbinding if it is not financially viable; therefore, desirable applicants who can’t afford the 70k+ a year can opt out of going to NYU if they don’t provide enough aid.
The OP said MERIT scholarship, not need-based FA. Therefore, there is a presumption that the OP did not apply for FA. Not applying for FA is a de facto statement you can afford the school.
