Merit aid at University of Redlands

Can anyone tell me how much merit based aid you can get at the University of Redlands? We will not qualify for any need-based aid. Academics are pretty good: GPA 4.1, some AP and honors, SAt is so-so at 1720 total and ACT at 25. Will take both tests again. Looking to bring cost in line with UC.

Redlands is very generous with financial aid. You child is likely to get very good merit awards with that GPA. Presidential scholarship is $2500 and Achievement Award is up to $13,500 per year, for a total of $16,000. The remaining COA would still be a little above the cost of a UC, but Redlands is also very good with need-based aid if that’s applicable (will you have 2 children in college at any point?)

Yes, I have another child in college now. I would likely not qualify for need-based aid as I am in that gray area where I have too much income to qualify for aid but not enough to pay my mortgage and other normal expenses and put two kids through college. There are so many things FAFSA does not consider. Thank you for your help.

has anyone ever received 50% of total costs in merit aid from Redlands?

I think it would be difficult, but not impossible, to get that much in merit from Redlands. The COA is around $50K, so that would be $25K in merit. There may be a way to get work study, but students with need would have priority for on-campus jobs.

My math was wrong in my previous post: $17K Achievement plus $2500 Presidential would total $19,500. If your child is eligible for the talent awards, then he/she might be able to bring the total over $20K. Any outside scholarships would help as well.

The admissions office is very approachable, so a call in to them might be useful.

You should plan for COA to increase by about 5% per year. If your child lives off campus or in one of the college apartments then meal costs will be lower.
