merit aid questions?

what act and gpa are needed to potentially qualify for merit aid? is there a cut off or minimum requirement for the dean's honor scholarship (i cant find one on the website) When you send in your app are you automatically considered for honors college, i cant find a separate app? also on the deans honors scholarship app it states the box project is in addition to the application for admission essay... son was sent a prefered app which eliminates the essay?

ok, let’s take these from the top.

There are no ACT (or SAT)/GPA minimums for merit aid officially, and applicants are automatically reviewed for a variety of awards. That said, common sense says that students in the upper tier of the usual Tulane range will be offered the aid, which ranges from the Academic Achievement Award through the Founders Scholarship and Distinguished Scholar Award to the Presidential Scholar Award. I believe these ranged from $14,000-$24,000 for the class that just started. They are guaranteed for all 4 years (5 for architecture) if the student remains full time, in good standing, and maintains a minimum GPA of 2.700.

Similarly there is no minimum for the DHS, but clearly only the very best will get an offer. Out of 40,000 total applicants, over 1,000 applied for the DHS, and 75 won. 26 of these enrolled.

Yes, you are automatically considered for the Honors Program (it is not an Honors College, there is a difference) and if you are accepted you are told when you receive your acceptance to Tulane. Same for the merit scholarship, except DHS, Community Service, and maybe a couple of others that are for Louisiana residents. These have their own applications and thus different deadlines, and notification usually comes about a month after the deadline.

I thought that my D had to do a short essay even though she got the preferred app also. Maybe I am confusing it with another school. To be 100% sure regarding the DHS, I would call admissions and talk to the person responsible for the administration of the DHS application process. By the way, I can tell you from what they said at the breakfast for DHS winners that they do take the box project seriously. Certainly test scores, high school record, and recommendations are big, but since so many kids shine in all these areas, the box project is a significant factor as well.

thank you fallenchemist! If his act is currently 32,(taking again in 1 week but lets assume it stays at 32) does he wait to be “invited” to submit dean’s or does he submit it with his app?

Oh, he won’t be invited to apply. At least I don’t think they do that. I suppose it might have been mentioned when my D got her acceptance and initial merit offer, but I don’t really remember. Anyway, if he wants to go for DHS, he just does it. He would not submit it with his app though. He should get his preferred app in (and maybe ask for EA if Tulane is indeed his top choice because this shows more interest), then take more time to work on the box project and write the essay, if they tell you that the latter is needed or a good idea. Also, I think he needs a recommendation just for the DHS, as I recall. I know the person doing the rec has to fill out a section of the DHS form also.

I did find this on the Tulane site after posting the first reply:

“Tulane offers 100 full tuition scholarships every year. Recipients generally earn a 2250 or higher on the SATs or a 33 on the ACT and possess outstanding high school records and recommendations along with breadth and depth in extracurricular activities. The DHS requires a submission of the DHS application and a teacher recommendation by December 15th.” Despite the 100 number, they did only offer only 75 this year.

So his 32 will be borderline, but no reason not to go for it. Other factors are important also.

fallenchemist, thank you once again. i didnt find that when i was at tulane site, (think however my brain may be mush today… ) hmm well maybe he could do his tulane preferred app, do the act on the 12th, be thinking about the box project and make a final decision regarding the dhs app once he sees his score (think they are supposed to be online by 9/28) EA on the preferred app is a great suggestion.
ps: in reviewing past posts, i think your d’s box project was brilliant!!!

Your welcome, and I will say thank you for my D in her absence. She actually had a lot of fun doing it.

I don’t think there is any reason for your S to not try for a DHS, there is nothing to lose but the effort. Also, if he has a lot of community service EC’s, there is the Community Service Scholarship. With that, it gets added on to whatever other merit money he might receive. I think it ranges from $5,000-$15,000 per year. I am assuming you are not from Louisiana, because there are other scholarships available to Louisiana residents only.

Could someone please explain the “box Project?”

The “box project” is just that. On the Dean’s Honor Scholarship form there is a ‘box’ to represent a project that you design and submit as part of your application. The only restriction in the past is that the project fit in 8 1/2 x 11 format and is 2 dimensional. In the past it has ranged from drawings, CD’s, games, photo collages as a few examples. The project is completely personal to you and should tell Tulane more about you as a person.
The deadline is mid-December.

Good Luck!

thanks, that’s helpful.

People have done everything from write music and submit cd’s to cut out the box and send ransom notes to the school. You can search on facebook for Tulane groups and read what students have done. Definitely apply!! That scolarship is a wonderful thing!! We love it!!

Students seem to be happy at Tulane!
