My son is interested in the Chem E program. He could easily go to Univ of TX but wants to get out of town.

The cost for OOS is quite a bit compared to UT. They do list a few scholarship options on the UIUC web site. It is hard to tell how generous they are with OOS students - do they just give a small number out? Don't need a full ride, just enough to help offset the difference.

Here are his stats:
GPA ~4.5/4.0 weighted, unweighted not sure but probably ~3.9 or so - does all AP where he can if not offered then does honors class.
Class rank - Still a junior, probably 1-3 out of 100, private high school
PSAT 217
SAT - not taken yet, got a 2330 on a practice test recently, so maybe 2100-2300 range
ACT - not taken yet, scored 30/32 on the ACT Plan with 100% on math & science

Does a lot of community service work and academic competitions - just won the local comp sci competition and is going to state finals.

Particularly for engineering programs there are a number of merit aid awards given usually mainly based of GPA/rank and test score. However, most of those provide only partial help, e.g., ranging anywhere from $500 year to an amount that is close to equalling the OOS increment of tuition but getting the higher awards in that group go only to a limited number of applicants. It is one of those things that you usually won’t know until after applying and being accepted (for most financial aid/merit awards, you won’t know whether you have one until March or early April after being accepted). In other words, it does not hurt to apply but don’t assume in doing so that you will actually get any merit aid.

D received the University Achievement Scholarship for non-residents - $12k/year, though it still leaves a large gap to be (financially) competitive with other colleges (especially your own in-state colleges). She was admitted into Engineering.

The scholarship letter was received around Christmas.

ACT 36, SAT 2350, 3 SATII (800/800/770), GPA 4.01 UW, 5 AP’s so far all 5’s, 2 APs in progress, NMF and a bunch of EC/leadership positions. Also 2 dual enrollment courses (Calc III & IV) in Sr year.
