Merit Aid

Montegut:

Sorry things did not work out with the FA for you. Thats really tough especially if one has their heart set o a particular school. My S is currently enrolled in the College of Health Sciences as a BioMed Sciences major.

My sister attended MU back in the early 80’s but I’m a University of Wisconsin-Madison alum so I don’t think my S would be considered ‘legacy’ as all. I am not aware that MU pay’s too much attention to legacy. Maybe for acceptance, but I doubt it helps with aid at all, but I really don’t know.

My S received the merit award long before applications to the Honors program were due. I think the merit aid notification came with the acceptance letter back in January and the Honors app was due like Feb 15 I think. So I don’t think it plays a part at all. I think the Magis award is for stuff that the college sees value in like leadership, service, aptitude in a given area. I think ‘Magis’ is latin for extra. I don’t know what they saw in my S for him to be given the Magis award.

As far as Co-oping… I’m an electrical engineer who co-oped and went on through to Grad school. The Co-op experience was incredibly significant both in terms of the real-world experience gained and the money earned. I would strongly encourage your S so go the Co-op route - it will be invaluable. It could possibly be the very best thing he could do to get his career started on a strong path.

^^^Ajax, thank you so much for your words of encouragement and advice!

Wishing your son lots of luck on his intended course of study. We were very impressed on our tour with the BioMed Science program, the ability to work on cadavers at the undergraduate level. Great experience, especially for those planning on med school.

Thanks for letting me stay connected with you guys. I’ve made some good friends on this board, as you guys helped us so much on our “quest” for Marquette, and we are wishing you all the best. Hope to see some of you guys on campus for grad school!
