I’m an incoming senior in high school, and I recently attended an information session at UVA, where they said that the school only offers need based aid However, I already know this is not true because I know there is a jefferson scholarship program that is based solely on merit. I was wondering if anyone knows of any other UVA scholarships that are based on merit-alone. Also, if anyone could provide some insight into my chances of receiving said scholoarships. I have…

The Jefferson program is run by a separate organization, with cooperation of the U.
There are very few merit scholarships from the U. for incoming first years. There are a few more merit scholarships within various departments for upper-classmen. However, your best chances for merit scholarships as a UVa student are to try to win local ones and ones through your high school. Sometimes local scholarships are not well-publicized. However, those types of scholarships often are not large, and often only apply to the first year. It helps to schmooze your high school guidance counselor and your teachers in advance of the scholarship decisions.
Thanks
The Alumni Association also administers some scholarships: http://alumni.virginia.edu/scholarships/
There are a couple scholarships that Student Financial Services administers that don’t take need into account:http://www.virginia.edu/financialaid/scholarships.php
We aren’t able to practice tuition discounting, which is what most people mean when they refer to merit money at other schools.
You have to be nominated to be considered for the Jefferson Scholar’s program. It is worth asking your HS if they are part of this program and are able to nominate a representative. Otherwise, it may be a tough road to obtain a nomination on your own (not impossible). You may want to call and find out the process exactly. Even if you are nominated, the odds are not in your favor because there are so may qualified that are ultimately considered and that are eliminated. That is not a knock against the eliminated nominees it is just that it is ultra competitive considering what the Jefferson Scholarship awards. The better odds may be to research and earn the local scholarships if possible. Good luck to you!
Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it!
The odds on the Jefferson scholarship are something like 2% of those nominated. Our school has numerous qualified candidates vying for that school level nomination too. The odds are better to get into Stanford which I believe was the hardest school to get into last year .
