Merit based Scholarships for International Students

Hi everyone. I am new in CC; a student from Bangladesh.
So far after tons of researching i found only a few schools that have Full Ride scholarships for international students.
Among them are Uni of Alabama, which i believe is the only one i can get. :(
I had high hopes for MSU, but i just discovered that its Alumni Scholarship (Full Ride) is a competition that has to be participated in, in USA. So, i guess i cant get that.

So, the question is, is there any other Unis that have full rides that do not include competitions or tests, and that i have a chance to get into?

Btw i've done IGCSE's and A'levels with mostly A's
Hoping to take SAT soon, and am aiming for 2000+

So, do offer your suggestions.
Another LAC i wanted to apply for is Trinity College. (For it's huge FA) Do u think that i should apply for it? And any other LAC's that have good FA ?

Thanks.

Alabama doesn’t give “full rides” to int’ls.

It does give “full tuition” scholarships to int’ls who have the right stats and meet the application deadlines.

A “full ride” would cover all costs…tuition, room, board, books, etc.

Also, even if you were to get a “full ride” scholarship, you’d still have to pay for "personal expenses, insurance, travel and other misc costs. Each school has a COA that int’ls must show is covered in order to get your visa to come here.

You would still be responsible for the remaining costs. How much will your family pay?

If your family will pay for room, board, etc, and you have the stats to get the full tuition scholarship, then apply at Bama now. The app is online already. And, submit the scholarship app.

What is your major?

Thanks for the quick reply.

My family would be able to show 50k. So no problem for COA.
But EFC is probably only 8-10k.
Another question that comes to mind, how much is the avg pay per hour in campus?

My Major is in Computer Science. Hoping to take a minor in maths.
Btw i saw in your posts that your sons are applied to Bama. How r they doing? have they finished school? And did they get the Full Tuition scholarships?

Like everyone else, you have to search for schools that give out big merit awards. Then you have to check out if international students are eligible for them. You then have to read up on what is required. Yes, a number of them do require early apps, an early visit, interview process. You eliminate those such schools since you don’t want to waste your time applying for what you cannot possible get. That will leave you still with quite a few schools. You categorize where you stand in terms of the student pool in what is there and make your picks as to the likelihood that you are among those who might get one of the big awards. Then you wait and see.

@Cptofthehouse: thanks for the guide. Do u have any such uni’s that come to mind?

Hi,

Unless you’re going to attend a school that gives need-based aid to an int’l, your “EFC” doesn’t mean anything. (I’m guessing that you mean your CSS estimated “family contribution”? You won’t have a FAFSA EFC.

How much will your parents PAY each year towards your housing, food, int’l transportation, etc. You’ll also need to buy health insurance.

Bama will give you full tuition PLUS 2500 for year for being a CS major if your stats are high enough. What are they?

Int’l students are VERY limited to how much/where they can work in the United States. Hopefully, someone here who knows the rules for int’l students working can chime in. That is a federal rule; schools don’t have any control over that.

Btw i saw in your posts that your sons are applied to Bama. How r they doing? have they finished school? And did they get the Full Tuition scholarships?

Both of my boys have graduated from Bama. One went into a PhD program at a top school. The other is going to med school this fall. Both received very large scholarships from Bama. One got the NMF scholarship - which covered tuition and housing plus more. The other son got the Presidential scholarship, the Engineering scholarship, and the National Merit Special Scholarship.

Sorry, i wasn’t fully aware about the EFC part.
Yes i meant they will pay around 8-10k a year.

Thanks, i will be aiming for that. Does the extra 2500 need to be applied for, or does it come with the full tuition automatic package?

And what do you think about trinity college? I collected that it gives atleast 42k of aid to int’ls. So, would i have a chance?

Trinity gives “at least $42k per year to internationals”? Where did you get THAT info?

Thanks, i will be aiming for that. Does the extra 2500 need to be applied for, or does it come with the full tuition automatic package?

To get both scholarships, you have to:

Apply to the school.
Select Computer Science or some kind of Eng’g discipline as your major
Submit the general scholarship application (this will take care of BOTH scholarships).

The scholarship app is a formality, but must be done.

Where are you getting the stat for how much aid Trinity gives int’ls?

It’s all here. Top 10 uni’s with highest avg aid. [10 Colleges That Give the Most International Student Financial Aid - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2012/10/16/10-colleges-that-give-the-most-international-student-financial-aid)

And, the average aid is actually 50k. 42k was last year’s.

bump- :)

Jam…you bumped this thread. What exactly do you want to KNOW?

the main question still stands @thumper1

“So, the question is, is there any other Unis that have full rides that do not include competitions or tests, and that i have a chance to get into?”

There is a thread stickied at the top of this forum that lists all of the Automatic merit-based full-rides and full-tuition scholarships that the combined minds here at CC have been able to identify. Go read it. Some are indeed open to international applicants. If you meet the criteria, and apply on time, you will get in and get that money. Period.

There also is a thread that lists all of the Competitive merit-based full-rides and full-tuition scholarships that the combined minds here at CC have been able to identify. Read through it too. There are no guarantees of admission, and no guarantees that you would get the money if admitted, but it may be worth your time to try.

If what you are reporting is indeed true, Trinity must be trying to attract high achieving international students. So…apply there. And see what happens.

You need to understand also, there are only SIX universities in the united states that are both need blind for admissions and meet full need for international students. Trinity is NOT one of them. In most cases, your ability to pay will be a factor in your admissions consideration…OR the school will not guarantee to meet your full need…or both.

I gather you have taken the SAT by now and have a real score.

If you are a senior now hoping to start college in fall 2014, you better get cracking here. Many of the most generous scholarships have an early application deadline…by December 15 at the latest. Some were December 1. Hope you didn’t miss the boat.

For example…Alabama must be submitted by December 15, including all the supporting documentation they request.

No actually im in my final year of A levels, will apply for 2015.
Thanks for the advice btw
And do you know how these uni’s will convert my O level and a level grades to GPA? Do let me know :)

I just retread the link you provided. The aid from Trinity is need based aid, not merit. It will be based on trinity’s calculation of what they feel your family can pay based on their income and assets.

Yes i know that. But i don’t think they’re gonna calculate anything about my family since im a student living in asia and dont meet usa standards for such calculation
But when u see that they give the aid to intl’s anyway you think maybe you can get it too if your stats and ECs are good enough

Oh yes…they WILL calculate your financial need. You will be required to submit an application for financial aid. You will need to send verification of your parent’s incomes and assets. This will all need to be reported in U.S. dollars. Your financial need will actually be computed the same way as for any other student…using income and assets.

What did you think…that international students were somehow exempt from applying? Just because you live Asia does NOT exclude you from having to go through the financial aid application process. You might want to discuss this with your parents…as they will be required to provide the necessary income and asset verification in order of you to be considered for aid at all.

Can your parents pay the $8000 or so family contribution that you are guessing (just curious where you got that number)? Remember, the colleges will compute what they think your family should contribute…not your family.
