Hi,

so, I am an international student, and I wonder if there are decent safety(but not like really crappy) colleges out there

that has full ride scholarships(tuition+dorm+book supplies+etc).

If you'd like to know about my stat, please write 'gimme your stat', then I will PM you.

Btw, my friend recommended U of Alabama to me, and I meet the least requirements

for all the scholarships there.

1)Does U of alabama covers all the tuition, dorm, supplies and other expenses?
2) If 1) is notcan i apply to multiple scholarships?
3) Can I use my outside scholarship to cover remaining fee?

No, Alabama’s scholarship doesn’t cover room, board, books, etc.

However, if you’re an eng’g or CS major, you do get an add’l 2500 per year on top the free tuition.

Yes, Alabama will let you stack add’l scholarships that you might get.

I doubt you’re going to get a “free ride” as an int’l at any known school. Free rides are rare w/o NMF status, and even more rare for int’ls.

Free rides (again, rare) don’t usually cover everything. They usually do not cover personal expenses, travel, insurance, supplies, etc.

It sounds like you either have about a 1400 Math plus CR or an ACT 32. There may be a rather unknown school that would give you a free ride.

Even if you got a “free ride”, as an int’l, you’d have to show that you have the money for personal expenses, insurance, int’l travel, etc.

How much will your parents pay each year?

BTW…to get the scholarship above, you need to apply before Dec 15 and submit the scholarships app. Both are easy…no essays, no LORs.

It sounds like you’re an int’l, but live in the US. Are you getting a green card?

If your family is low income, I don’t know where you’d get enough aid outside of a tippy top school or an unknown school that would give you a free ride.

Can you work or are you not allowed to work? If you’re not allowed to work, then that will also be an issue at schools that give a “free ride merit” because those don’t usually cover things like insurance, personal expenses, and travel costs. How would you cover those costs?

Look at Louisiana Tech

-Well I am not allowed to workOUTSIDE
but I can work in campus.
I am not sure about personal expense because I won’t spend much??(I asked if my outside
scholarship can cover my travel expense)
Also, if you can, I’d like to avoid Southern part(U of A is an only exceptio) because my mom will move with me as I go to college, and she doesn’t go to southern states.

Also, i m not a green card holder, but I plan to be permanent resident within 2 yrs; my sister is a citizen.

*I am not sure about personal expense because I won’t spend much??(I asked if my outside *

Well, there will be personal expenses even if you’re thrifty.

Yes, outside scholarships can pay for transportation, etc, but those would FIRST go towards room and board.

That said, if your MOM is going to move WITH you, then if you went to Alabama, she could live somewhere close to campus and you could live WITH her.

Does your mom have a good job? If not, how does she support herself?

What is your major?

You could maybe find a job on campus, but as you may know, many oncampus jobs are work-study jobs. There are some jobs that aren’t work study, so those might work.

eh, mom can’t work either(she’s a foreigner too) we just get some support from our relatives in irregular basis, and living outside campus would be too much work.
I want to major in bio chem and spanish. I hope I can get self employed tutor job.
do you know whether its easy to get people who needs tutoring? I am very good at chemistry, and won 52/60 in local chem(too bad i couldn’t take national exam due to status0

^^^
So, if you get a full tuition scholarship, you’re expecting to get outside scholarships to cover about $12k-15k in room, board, books, fees, etc? That’s not likely.

You can tutor, but income can be irregular.

there are few outside scholarships for int’ls.

hm any suggestions?

You need to be realistic based on your limitations.

you’re an int’l and your mom has no income. If she can get enough financial help to live here, then really you probably are going to have to live WITH her while attending college…or go to a lesser known school that will give you a “free ride”…so then anything you earn can go towards “day to day” personal expenses…which you WILL have.

Don’t you have to show means of support for you and your mom to get long-term visas to be here?? Do you have a dad? IF so, can he pay for any of your college?

Good news! accodring to website,
For scholarships awarded only by Undergraduate Admissions — If tuition is being paid by an outside source, with the exception of the Academic Common Market, the scholarship dollars may be used for other educational expenses (room, board, books, etc).

yes, at some schools that is true . It is at Bama. Where will you get that other scholarship ?

Paul, where do you live/study now?

mom can’t work either(she’s a foreigner too) we just get some support from our relatives in irregular basis

Are you living with relatives now? Or do you live alone with your mom in apt while getting money from relatives?

If you’re living with relatives, then I don’t see how your mom can move to your college town and have a separate apt while you live in a dorm. Plus, moving is expensive. It would be one thing if your mom had a steady/dependable income of a couple thousand per money or so. But an irregular source of money isn’t going to fund her living expenses which will run a couple thousand a month…rent, utilities, phone, food, medical, personal expenses, etc.

It’s easy to let “wants” get in the way of what’s reasonable and possible. If your mom is going to move to your college town, and funding for BOTH of you is a huge issue, then trying to fund two different places to live just doesnt’ seem reasonable unless you can ger a complete free ride and your relatives commit to renting an apt for your mom and providing for all the rest of your expenses.

Does your mom drive/have a car?

Thanks Ucbalumnus.
And, yeah we have a car, but it was long timeago when saving wasn’t dwindling.(only mom and I)
maybe mom will go back to our homecouuntry.

And, I live in oregon.

^^

You need to sit down with your mom so that you’re dealing with facts. She may not want to leave the country and leave you here by yourself.

Besides, unless you choose to go to a rather unknown school that will give you a full ride plus, you may need your mom nearby so that you’ll have a place to live.

As an int’l with lots of need, you have some huge hurdles. You can’t borrow, you have to show that you have costs covered, you’ll have to buy insurance (which is running a couple thousand per year), and you have to cover your personal expenses (cell phone, clothing, toiletries, etc). You may feel that you won’t have much in personal expenses, but you will.

Do you qualify for instate tuition in Oregon? If so…look there.

Yes. I am thinking about U of O but it’s not so much my majors…
I am also targeting some great schools, and most of them are all great pre meds aiwht great programs.
Brown and Uchicago are my top 1-2 choices .

I don’t think he can afford the in state of Oregon. he’s an international and he get no aid.

His only choices are schools that will give full aid to international students or will give almost a full ride
