Has any child received any merit based aid? My child is in the Top 2 % of his school and active in leadership and volunteer activities. He received zero merit based.
They give out few, and only to the most exceptional students. Most kids that get into UR are exceptional in their High School but average in UR. Our kid didn’t get one at UR but did from schools a tier below this one like RIT.
My daughter received a merit scholarship for $25,000, a bit after she got accepted on 2/8. It was the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences. She had been given this award by her high school last year, which I think guaranteed that she would get at least $10,000/year if she got in to the U of R. But then she ended up receiving a bump up to $25,000. We are grateful!
My son received merit aid of $10K per year. He was notified within a few days of being accepted.
congrats! when was he accepted?
Thank you! Early February.
My kid got 15K. It’s still ridiculously expensive for us and not likely going to work.
I got a 20k Rush Rhees Scholarship.
Lots of merit based awards at UofR. Son received Susan B Anthony / Frederick Douglass award 25k (but did not attend c/o 2021) and daughters both received aid this cycle
@RoverSally : That is awesome news about the bump up in the scholarship. Awesome for your daughter. Congratulations.
Thank you so much @Waiting2exhale ! We feel really lucky because my employer also offers around the same amount of tuition benefit for college per year, so this would pretty much cover my daughter’s tuition at U of R; we’d just be paying for housing/food. @fbsdreams , can you share why your son opted not to attend the U of R despite receiving the large merit scholarship?
@RoverSally my son chose to attend UChicago.
UofR can/will also offer guaranteed research to sweeten the offer.
@fbsdreams thanks for your response! I actually knew about the research stipend because my son also got into Rochester a few years ago (but ended up elsewhere). It is a nice perk!
Is anyone on here a NMF? My son is & we were told a range of what his scholarship could be($25- $35,000). They gave him originally only $14,000 then grant $, when we spoke t to them they told me if declared #1 would be in that range. but grant $ goes down. The gave me an estimate of grant $ with $25,000. My problem lies with knowing grant $ changes yearly & my sons 2nd year we go from 2 in college to 1 & we will probably lose the grant $ or at least 1/2 of it. If the scholarship is at $35,000 then we will be ok sending him there with a small loan. We are trying to keep #s as close to a nays school.
