Merit for ugrad bus school if not state flagship?

My son wants to be a business major at University of Maryland College Park. He is a rising senior, with close to a 4.0 weighted GPA, but about a 3.2 or 3.3 unweighted. His SAT score is 2050, with 670 math and 720 reading. If he gets into UMD, even if he does not get into the business school right away, he will likely go to UMD. Does anyone have any ideas about business schools that are pretty good where he would get a fair amount of merit aid if he doesn't get into UMD? I'm hoping to keep the cost close to UMD if possible?
Thanks

I probably should have added more information. A medium to large school is probably better for him, and there is a chance he will change his mind about major, so I’d like him to go to a school that’s generally fairly well regarded. Syracuse looks like a good school for him, because he also really likes journalism, but I don’t think he’d qualify for any merit aid there. Pitt may be an option-but I’m not sure he will get any merit there either. He will likely stay fairly close to home, but if he needs to fly I want it to be close to an airport.

Admission to the undergraduate business major takes place in sophomore year based on the students GPA at Maryland. HS GPA is not taken into account. You may want to consider direct admission into the business school for college freshman such as Villanova’s program offers. These direct admission programs tend to be quite competitive as is Maryland’s for junior year admission. James Madison is direct admission. William and Mary admission takes place based on college GPA like Maryland’s.

Actually some number of freshman get admitted to UMDs business program. It’s a LEP -limited enrollment program, and it’s quite competitive to get in as a freshman.
He would likely receive no merit aid from W&M -he probably wouldn’t even get in there. Do you happen to know how competitive James Madision is or is they give much merit aid to out of state students?

Look at Miami-Ohio ( Farmer School of Business )- he might qualify for one of their generous merit aid scholarships- they would use weighted GPA, I believe. IU-Kelley also has a direct admit program and they do give merit $ to OOS students. Not sure what the costs are at Univ MD so not sure what your budget is. I agree with looking at schools with direct admit programs.

Budget preferably total cost (tuition, room and board) around 25K per year or so. Thanks for the suggestions.

I’m not sure if any of the SUNY campuses have UG business, but they would be near your price point.

Mom2…what about Alabama? Do they use weighted or unweighted GPA?

Just saying that my D was a top athletic recruit & Maryland would not give her admission to business major until junior year even with 3.85 unweighted & 4.2 weighted. She got into all other programs that she considered for business major.

NC State University has direct admit majors. OOS costs are more than 25K though and prob. no merit.

At Miami - Ohio the scholarship to bring you down to about $27k from OOS is 1/2-full tuition requiring a 3.7, 1400 SAT, and ‘rigorous’ coursework (at least half, up to full tuition). The acceptance rate to the school is pretty high but the acceptance rate to the business school is about 18%.

You may also check UDel which is not far from you and offers OOS scholarships.

I graduated from UMCP many years ago with a BS in Physics/Astronomy and can assure you that if you are a resident of Maryland and can pay in-state tuition you will not find a better value in a college or university anywhere than UMCP.

Alabama uses weighted GPA and at presently published numbers (next year’s aren’t known yet but the numbers haven’t changed in the past few years) your S is only 10 SAT points points shy of a full tuition scholarship (he qualifies for 2/3 tuition). There is direct admission to the B school and some programs (such as Accounting) are very well regarded.

In the northeast he might find Bentley, Babson, or Bryant interesting. I believe they all have merit … not sure of the requirements to get a big award.

Is UMDCP the ONLY instate Maryland public university with a business program? Look at the other schools in your state.

Thanks for suggestions. I agree that UMDCP is a wonderful school and he won’t find anything more cost effective.
I’m looking for backup suggestions that have similar quality business schools and that he’d be likely to get a merit scholarship to attend, based on his stats, in case he doesn’t get in to UMD. He is not really interested in any of the other UMD campuses except possibly St. Mary’s and they don’t have a business major, and it’s a pretty small school.

U Dayton has a good B school and assured financial aid. [Apply: Undergraduate : University of Dayton, Ohio](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission : University of Dayton, Ohio”>Undergraduate Admission : University of Dayton, Ohio) They also have a set price for your four years.
