What type of merit scholarship will I get if any? I need at least 20k to go to Tulane. I would be in the Freeman School of Business if I went.
3.69 UW GPA, 7 APs, 1420 SAT, several leadership positions, worked on a congressional campaign, and have shown a keen interest in Tulane.
My son got 22k this year but had a 3.8 and a 1470. They have been lowering merit in favor of more FA lately. Do not apply ED if you’re looking for merit. Tulane is stingier in the ED round with merit.
How can I improve my chances to receive more merit?
It’s really important to set expectations. Admissions at most schools has become increasingly cutthroat over the past few years, and merit even stingier. Based on the class of 2023, you cannot assume that the right scores will even get you in the door, much less merit. Unlike some of the other schools that guarantee a certain amount of merit based on scores, Tulane doesn’t publish or guarantee that. I will say my son received 28K with a 3.9UW/1540 SAT/35 ACT … however I read about people here in CC with stronger scores that received less merit and some with weaker scores that received more.
This past year many people who applied for the Paul Tulane and Dean’s Honor scholarship, but didn’t win, received extra money on top of their merit. It wasn’t much; ranges from $1K-3K per year, but that’s better than nothing. I would encourage anyone seriously interested in Tulane to spend a lot of time on their Why Tulane essay, in addition to applying for the scholarships. Yes, they do take time, but they show a level of interest and commitment above other applicants.
