Merit Scholarship? Please help

I got accepted to GW (yay!) but i need to know whether or not i got any merit scholarships since i have 2 other siblings and my parents can't pay 60k a year. I'm hoping for 20k scholarship.

One of my friends has already found out that she got 20k merit scholarship without being accepted to the honors program so how can you find out?

thanks!

Hey it says on you admission decision when you check your application status under the congratulations part. Mine says “in addition to your admission is a president scholarship of $20k”

^ It wasn’t like that for me. On the Application Status Page, there is another sub-heading titled “Scholarship Information” (scroll down a bit) and that is where I was informed of my presidential scholarship. Hope you find it!

Either way, the merit scholarship would have been with your acceptance on the GWapplication portal.

My daughter is accepted to GW and is thrilled because it’s by far her 1st choice, but sadly, there’s no way we can afford to pay the full cost. Hopefully, they will award her some type of aid, but it’s impossible to tell from the information we’re seeing so far when we log in, and it seems some other people are seeing financial aid awards. Here’s what we’re seeing -

When we visit the Application Status Page, and see the wonderful news that she’s accepted, we scroll down and don’t see any specific info or link for Financial Aid, but at the bottom of the page, it states this -

"Financial Aid Credential Checklist

We encourage all applicants, who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, to apply for need based financial assistance by submitting the following documents. However, if you choose not to apply for need based assistance the documents are not required. Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for need based financial aid and therefore are not required to submit the documents. These forms are used solely to determine financial aid eligibility and are not considered in the admissions or merit scholarship review process. Please keep in mind that it may take up to three weeks for materials to be processed once they arrive in the Financial Aid Office.

That message shows that they’ve received everything they need to in order for my daughter to be considered for financial aid, (and received it a long time ago as we sent it in well over a month ago), so maybe this indicates that she’s not getting any GW aid at all?

One would think that’s the case, but then when we click on “Next Steps”, we get this message -

“Financial aid awards will be available to view online for students who submitted all required documents by February 1 starting April 4, 2012.”

So…maybe some aid has been awarded to some admitted student yet for others, it’s still being decided?? Can anyone shed any light on any of this?

Many thanks and CONGRATS to all !!

I’m also waiting to hear about financial aid from GW… It sounds like they’ve only given out merit aid (merit scholarships) so far and not need-based, right? Unless anyone’s gotten any grants/loans for need-based aid yet, in which case where might one find that?

The only people who have received their need-based financial aid is the EDI and EDII students. Like it says on their website, RD need-aid wont be released till April.

All merit-aid has been given out, though.

Yes, @Rosie31, you’re right. You will know by April 4th whether or not you’ve received need-based aid. The cases that people are talking about above are for those of us who auditioned for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts program, which is merit-based. Don’t worry, we’re still waiting for need-based aid notification also!

i just called and they said that you still may receive merit based aid even if it is not listed on your portal. aid packets will be out first week of april, so any need/merit based aid will be listed their.

We are in the same situation @carsch…still waiting to hear about financial aid. D can’t attend without substantial grants.

got my stuff online yesterday. not too happy :/

sorry :frowning: I know my D is a nervous wreck while we figure out whether or not she can attend.

I know, Momof2, my D is a nervous wreck, too! We still don’t see any info when she logs on to her GW ID and goes to the fin aid portal so we’re left wondering, does this mean that she won’t get any aid at all, or are they still working on it? How are we supposed to know? The lack of clear information is very frustrating.

She has a great merit aid award from a school that is more competitive in terms of admission, yet she still has her heart set on GW. She didn’t receive any merit aid from GW (they told us that this was only awarded to the very top academic applicants, and although she was strong, she must’ve just missed the mark). Based on the info online, it looked like April 4th was going to be the day to view any need-based aid award via her online portal, but now that it’s a couple days later, she called today and the fin aid office told her the info was going to be sent “in batches” and she’d get an email when fin aid is available for viewing. Still no email and when she logs on under her GW ID, the fin aid link still shows full cost of $60,000, not offset by any aid.

So…is this the GW final decision about fin aid? How are we supposed to know?

I guess she’ll call and ask again on Mon, but this is very frustrating, especially when there’s another great offer out there, which I would like her to start focusing on if GW is not going to happen for her!

I’m sorry you are having such troubles carsch, but I think you have all the information possible right now. It seems, from what you said, that they are giving out the financial aid decisions in a staggered manner and they will e-mail you when it is ready. Seems like you guys got the short straw and have to wait. But I am sure that they will e-mail you when the financial aid decision is ready, like they said.

Since they didn’t e-mail you yet, that’s probably why there is nothing up.

Also, the Cost of Attendance part will not change, that is specifically for the total unadjusted Cost of Attendance for GW.

To answer your last question, no this isn’t GW’s final decision about finaid and you are supposed to know because they told you that you would receive an e-mail :P

And as long as your EFC isn’t ridiculously high, you should expect some form of aid. GW isn’t a meet-need school, but they typically meet 94% of need of the 40-60% of students that actually receive financial aid. So that’s a pretty comforting thought in itself, no? And if you are entitled to the Pell Grant and loans, you will get those at the very least.

@carsch, my D never received and email but we logged into GWeb after reading that many others had their aid posted and there is was. Interestingly, she still has not received the notification email. I called Friday to inquire whether we would be receiving the package in the mail and they said no, only online and email. When I told them that we never received the notification email, they said that if the notification email did not go through then I would receive the award in the mail.

My D really wants to attend here. I am torn between it and our state school, UF, where she would not have to spend a penny. Even with the GW merit and need based aid, my D would have to take out some student loans.

I am hoping to visit very soon as I have not seen the school myself. My D did have the opportunity to attend an overnight event and loved it at GW.

Best of luck!

I just emailed their office yesterday and they replied with “you will know your fin aid by the matriculation deadline”…great. I have an efc of 12,000; but i only received federal aid through BU which makes me kind of nervous. Ugh, I have literally checked my GW Web account like every 10 minutes and nothing!

@sswan94, I would call them. It isn’t reasonable for them to expect you to not know until then. It seems many have received the info while there are still many like you that have not. The others schools my D was admitted to sent their award either with the offer of admission or within a few days via email.
