Greetings,
Have any prospective students heard about merit funds or do any current students have information on stats for these scholarships?
St. Lawrence seems to have a lot of merit scholarships available and I am wondering how competitive it they are/the stats of students who secure these scholarships.
Thanks for any information.

My D’s friend got one, but it did not reduce his EFC in any way or amount of loans.

SLU mails the FA packages with letter of acceptances, (usually large envelope).
Acceptances are supposed to be mailed out this year on March 19th.

We got the fat envelope in the mail today, but DD has forbidden the grownups from touching the mail, so we have to wait til she gets home. Hoping for some merit scholarship money.

My daughter got an offer but it says that the GPA must be kept up to keep it. Does anybody know how hard they grade at SLU?

got 17.5k/year
3.7 gpa
1900 SATS
tons of extra circulars with leadership roles

Hi everyone,

I am a current merit scholar at St. Lawrence and have been since my freshman year! I was a strong student in high school and found SLU academically challenging. The great part about SLU for me has been enjoying my classroom experience and being truly excited about what I am learning. I am a senior english major and fine arts minor and will be attending law school next year! Please feel free to ask me questions! I will check back in soon.

@lawhcb- do you ever get claustrophobic there because it’s so remote?

also, how tough is the workload and do profs grade on a curve or is an A an A?

Canton is a rural town but for me that has never been a problem. I think it makes SLU much more of a community. The school definitely recognizes the difficulties of being located in a small town and works to combat that as much as possible. There are always different activities going on around campus! We are located about 2 hours from Syracuse, 1.5 hours from Ottawa and 2 hours from Montreal! I have said since I was a freshman that I wanted to take a weekend trip to Montreal… but as a senior I still have never visited! There is always something else that I wanted to do on campus more!

Right now it at a professor’s discretion whether or not to grade on a curve. I have never encountered it but I am also a English major and Fine arts minor. I think more professors in the sciences curve than in any other department. SLU is looking to establish a standardized grading system that may eliminate the need for the curve very soon!

My son is a freshman (Class of 2014) and received a Presidential Diversity Scholarship ($30K/yr for 4 years), an incredible amount considering we would do not qualify for any type of need based financial aid. St. Lawrence offers quite a few of these, in addition to other merit scholarships that are definitely worth looking into. In this time of economic hardship, St. Lawrence alumni continue to give back to the school (even more this year), a sign that they have attained a great education that has prepared them well to go on to graduate school and achieve professional and financial success. The school is very close knit, campus is small yet has top notch facilities and amenities of a large university without the crowds, and the location is conducive for studying. We have not met anyone who didn’t like it, and my son is loving it after his first month.

His stats were: top 10% of class, ACT=30 (even though they don’t require std tests), played premier/ODP soccer and captain of his high school and Empire Games Adirondack Scholastic team (recruited for SLU mens team), pretty well written essay, great teacher recommendations, lots of volunteer activities, internship at hospital, and is planning to major in chemistry to go on to pre-med studies. He was also accepted at a couple of the top liberal arts colleges, but no scholarship/financial aid offered. St. Lawrence was a really good fit.

Thanks Kichan… My S is a junior and has SLU on his radar. We hope to visit this Spring. That is wonderful news about the merit scholarships there. My S goes to a top private school in CA and is looking for a close knit group of students where his love of learning and passion for the outdoors would be embraced. High test scores, rigorous course load. My S is an Eagle Scout, volunteer fireman/search and rescue, 750 hrs community service with summers spent on conservation efforts all of the country. Going to a school in Vermont next semester that is on an organic farm and all the students help run it while taking classes. Hiked to the top of all of the highest peaks in CA. He is looking at few reaches, but mostly at schools that have great merit aid. This one looks like a keeper.

does anyone know if the merit scholarship application date is different than regular decision?
i love slu:)

Did your son apply early decision? If so, was the Pres. Div. application due at the time of ED or was he able to hand the application in a later date? Thank you.

Hey Everyone!

Our four essay based scholarships are due February 1st (Vilas, Leadership, Presidential Diversity Scholarship, and Community Service). The merit scholarships student automatically qualify for because it is based on the transcript.

Hopefully this information helps!
