I am an applicant to St. Lawrence from Nepal for the class of 2012. I know the competition this year will be tougher. Best of luck to all the applicants and guys let us post our thoughts here and keep the discussion going.

My son has applied. Do you have stats?

As a SLU parent, I wish you the best of luck. It is one of those gem schools.

I know that the last two years have been record breaking and according to President Sullivan, this year will be no exception. Last year the acceptance rate was 43%. There are reasons for the record applications, the campus has undergone major capital improvements that make the campus very competitive and the atmosphere very comfortable (even with the 2 feet of snow this December).

Curlygirl61, SLU is following the trend of several top LAC and is SAT optional, so I wonder how sats are interpreted.

Best of luck during this very difficult time.

Well, I know they are optional, but he chose to use them as well as his ACT. He is one of those typical stories of boys who mature slower and shows progression. Young for his grade with a June birthday. He has a 590 CR, 680 Math and 600 Writing, which are well within the 50% to higher range for the school and a 27 ACt. His GPA is a bit lower, maybe like a 3.1 or 3.2, but shows progression and he also has a mix of probably half honors classes and half regular college, with some fairly challenging courses. There have been about 3 students from his school go to St. Lawrence over the past few years and my ne[hew is currently a sophomore there. It is one of his top choices, but again, finances will play a huge role. I think the fit would be great as he is a hockey player and although obviously he could not play for the team, they have plenty of intramurals and club hockley available and he is very outdoorsy and likes rock climbing etc and they have a very active outing club.

Plus, coming from Maine, the cold weather doesn't scare him. My only issue with the school is the distance! No good way to get there!

There sure isn't an easy way to get to Canton from Maine! Or most anywhere for that matter. You have to want to live in Canton for the four years because it isn't close to much but Ottawa and Lake Placid (not so bad)

I hope the finances work out for your son. My children have scholarships (Presidental) which can range up to $20,000. A GPA must be maintained for the 4 years. It looks like your son falls right in the average for scores of Critical Reading: 614, Mathematics: 616, Writing: 615. Hard to say about a scholarship but 81% of the 2011 matriculants received some form of financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants or loans. Also, freshman can enjoy a variety of work study opportunities unlike at many schools that give freshman the undesireable jobs.

I does sound like he would be very happy there.

Even I am applying for RD this session.
my Stats:

GPA:3.5
TOp 10% of class.
SAT Optional so I m not sending them.

ECA:( Few Major Ones only Listed)
Player of National A- Division Soccer Team.
President of Computer Club.
Vice President of Sports Council.
Founder of NGO.
Winner of Computer Gaming COmpetition.
Winner of Cricket Tournament.
Few national Merit Awards in Class 10.
Valedictorian of school in Class 10.
Organized various Events as Head.
There are many more.

What are my odds???
I am looking for scholarship or aid.. maximum required...

You have to keep in mind why schools are deciding to go SAT optional. The general feeling is that there are many ways to view the potential of a student, SAT scores being only one such way and not the best for some students. When deciding not to share SAT scores, the application MUST show your strong abilities in other areas. To quote President Sullivan students are selected for "their seriousness of purpose and intellectual promise". SLU is committed to
-inspiring students- not just exposing them
-being demanding - high expectations will encourage student to achieve
-the undergraduate- that's the focus
-a LIBERAL ARTS education- reinforced constantly by faculty, advisors and administration

Your odds, not my game, but youdo seem to have skills and a willingness to share them, an asset for a University community. Best of luck

In my opinion, the student best suited for St. Lawrence University is an intelligent athlete who is quite social. The typical Larrie is similiar to the typical Colgate University student, only a bit more outdoorsey. SLU is isolated, but is also a very active, participatory environment. For a break from rural upstate New York, SLU offers several study abroad options. A great school for ice hockey and soccer players.

I do think to paraphrase icy9ff8 "the intellignet athlete who is quite social" would be happy at SLU, but there are plenty of other "typical" students who don't meet that stereotype, I know two very well!

I do think that you have to be excited about it's location to have a good four years. The location partly builds the strong sense of communtiy. You also need to be willing to explore ways to join in the school environment to make the most of the University experience. Icy9ff8 is correct that it is a very active participatory environment. It seems that the students who haven't been happy are those who don't venture out and somehow become involved. I guess maybe you have to develop a little of the North Country "ruggedness" to make the most of the harsh winter but the spectacular North Country spring makes it all worthwhile. You can complain about the cold and snow but somewhere you have to like the challenge it presents. This is not a suitcase school, you need to become part of the University scene

Thank you. I got my answer. I will surely apply in St. Lawrence.
icy9ff8 said "Intelligent sociable athlete";
I believe I am sociable and a good athlete. Intelligent, well I guess i am.

I have applied early to St. Lawrence University and I know there are other applicants as well. Let us all post our stats and our thoughts that will help us get through this application process. Let us all keep the discussion going.

ok you go. I already posted my son's stats.

If I can help answer any questions about the campus, I will try. Some improvements that are hot topics of discussion on campus include two new student social spaces
- A new permanent home for "Java Barn", a long established student space where bands play every Friday and Saturday night
-A campus pub - a place where students age 21+ can enjoy a beer of glass of wine in a responsible setting and enjoy each other's company. A popular idea at many colleges and an opportunity for dialog with students about the use of alcohol in social situations in preparation for life after graduation.

I applied too! I wasn't planning on it but am really happy now!

Good luck to everyone :)

Well I have posted my stats.
Ur turn now.
this time the competition is tough.

I have heard more than 7 applicants by bow from my country.

AL da ebst everyone..

kCcer, which school did you attend?

Hey slu applicants, I currently attend slu, so if you guys got any questions, just send me a message. As for the stats, slu seriously look at the potential of the student. Since they do not really look at test scores, extra curric and gpa plays a bigger role. I know that slu offers fin aid too int'l students and also the school is looking for more diversity. SLU is awesome!!! It's a great palce once you come here and you do not have to play soccer or really enjoy hockey that much :P

Not 7...
Almost eveyone i know are applying...
:(

Heyy KCcer, Slu is a great school, applicants this year are above 5100 last I check. Def. a 30% acceptance rate range, don't worry about the competition thoug

The waiting can be tough!
Something to ponder, the class of 2011 ended up something like 60% female and 40% male. Not so good! This year they are trying to improve the disproportions. It could be a good year for male admits.
