Merit Scholarships - what does it take?

Does anyone have anecdotal knowledge about what it takes to earn a merit scholarships?

Test Scores, Grades, EC's ...

Are the Rodriguez and Ervin scholarships designed for minority students only?

Anything else worth knowing?

thank you.

Anyone can apply; they aren’t just limited to minorities.

Besides the excellent scores, gpa, and ecs, you really just need a whole lot of luck. There are very few scholarships, and many that apply (maybe a 1% chance).

Thank you.

I know a ton of merit scholars and honestly I don’t think any of them share one common trait that put them over the edge. Just like the overall freshman class, the people who go on to become merit scholars each brought something unique to the table and did so while being really nice, normal, cool people. The chances of getting the scholarship are very slim, marcdvl is probably right about the 1% estimate, but that one percent represents almost 60 people across both programs. It’s difficult, but not impossible and if you are serious about being a part of either of those programs, stop thinking about it as a tangible thing you have to do or be and just be you.
