I might be wrong, music mom, but I suspect shipman weekend and amazin blue would be mutually redundant…its likely that a shipman scholar wouldn’t be invited to AB just as a practical consideration. Eg. Similar tours, discussions, events, previewing.
For those who have been invited (or their kids) to the Shipman weekend, do they see anything about the Shipman scholarship on their Wolverine access page?
@Lisn123
Yes, I have
- SHIPMAN, SIDNEY & IRENE SCHL
and
- UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN GRANT
on my WA
@viphan My son has the same. We are a bit confused as to why Shipman is showing up on there now?
@Lisn123 If you got invited, you are automatically awarded $25,000. IF you are one of the 15 chosen during the weekend, you get an additional $5,000.
My son has the same: 25k Shipman and $10 k LSA. If he is selected after the weekend it will be $5k more.
Thanks @viphan - We had some confusion because on their website it says :
“Students that receive the full Shipman Scholarship are awarded $15,000/year, for four years, or completion of their undergraduate degree program; whichever comes first. The full Shipman Scholarship also, has a room and board component, ($10,246 for the 2014 year); which can be utilized by students that choose to live in the U-M Residence Halls.
Students that are invited to campus as Shipman nominees, but are not selected for the full Shipman Scholarship, would still receive a Shipman award in the amount of $7,500/year, for four years, or completion of their undergraduate degree program; whichever comes first”
But the letter states it as you did ($15,000 for my son, because he’s in state) and possible additional $5000
Thanks to you as well @Musicmom2015
Mom of EA Admit here.
My son hasn’t checked WA since December. Did you find out about Merit Scholarships through e-mails as well as WA – or just WA?
Thanks!
@billcsho Have you ever had a revised FA award when the award was lower than the previous estimate (given the financial circumstances remain the same)?
I did happen once on WA but not on the award notice. When my D got one external scholarship, they add the amount in the total aid without changing the grant amount cor a few days. Then they reduced the grant by the exact amount. Anyway, it is more likely to get better as they will find out more unused aid from declined students and redistribute them.
@Lisn123 , I think the Shipman info that you pulled up is outdated, from last year and prior years. What @Musicmom2015 said is correct for this year: for OOS, 25K +10K guaranteed (if you attend the weekend) and a possible extra 5K. For in-state, it is 15K+5K with possible extra 5K.
Now my D has been offered about $60K from another school, but still has her heart set on UM. Does anyone know anything about trying to negotiate a merit scholarship by showing offers from other schools? I’m just hoping she gets something to help justify spending the $ on UM.
Does anyone have information on the actual interview component of the Shipman weekend? The itinerary we’ve seen so far is pretty vague. They tell the kids to dress up for the one day but that’s it. Is there an actual interview? How do they select the kids to receive the extra $ and I wonder how many of the 30 kids get it? I’m telling my son it’s a low stress thing since the large portion of the scholarship is already guaranteed. But it would be nice to know what to expect. Thanks!
@Musicmom2015 - we pretty much have the same info as you- Not a lot of detail and under the impression that you shouldn’t stress too much about the “interview” - I’m not sure there is even a single person interview or if it all happens in group discussions (large & small, when I think they break up into their colleges) Like you said, I think being asked is a great honor and bonus if you win the additional scholarship.
@Musicmom2015 No detail regarding the interview process for me as well. By the way, where did you find the number 30? I read 40-50 invitees every year.
I heard they reduced the number of Shipman invitees this year to 30, to make the scholarships bigger, especially for out-of-state kids. I think this is fair, because the differential between in-state and out-of-state costs is huge. (And we are in-state!) Also, much more of the scholarship is guaranteed up-front if you attend the weekend. This strategy is definitely working, because my D passed up a similar scholarship interview for the same weekend at a higher-ranked university, because not much was guaranteed. And we were not going to give up the sure thing!
When my son spoke to them initially he was told 30 students were invited for the weekend. He was also told that about 20 usually attend UM. ( I think that’s right.). Obviously these kids are likely to have multiple schools to choose from.
@ClueBus Wise decision. Also, because the amount of only $5000 (compared to the $25000) is up for selection, the atmosphere won’t be as cutthroat as it would have if students were competing for a larger sum.
Consequently, I will be attending the weekend with a lax heart, more geared to appreciate the school and the community rather than getting the additional scholarship. I already got a significant grant aid from the university, and my family can thankfully afford the remaining CoA (although every penny helps).
@Musicmom2015 and @ClueBus have either of your kids been to U of M for other visits? or weekends? @viphan , I think you said you were there for leadership weekend? My son was there for the top scholars weekend. I think you are going in with the right mindset @viphan - enjoy the weekend and gather all the information you can to help you make your decision on which college to attend. (if you haven’t decided yet Thats what we are telling our son. Relax, be yourself, enjoy your time meeting new people and get a feeling if this is the right college for him. He’s currently very torn between two colleges and I hope time spent at each university will help him make that choice.
