@billcsho Why do you say this? As per the LSA web site, merit scholarships are announced “by mid April”.
@anxious00 It is announced by April but merit scholarship is automatically considered for EA applicants and those admitted by Feb 1.
I was admitted to CoE, and I’d rather not put my stats on here but they gave me very, very little grant aid and a decent amount of loan options
So if someone has not been accepted yet, is it a good bet that they will not get any aid?
@adkdad Not likely for merit scholarship but with some exceptions though like for Music school. Basically, if you are a top candidate in EA, they have accepted you by Feb 1 already.
@ARandomGeek Thanks for your post about the award showing up in your portal. D2 had already received a $20K/year award from LSA. She’s OOS, so that was great, but not enough to bridge the gap to our excellent in-state options. Having seen your post and some others from the past that talked about awards just showing up, I had her check her portal tonight. She also received the Jean Fairfax award, which is another $10K/year and covers the gap to the state schools.
I just don’t understand why Michigan would do this this way. @billcsho any insights? BTW, she still hasn’t been invited to Amaizin Blue or anything like that. She sent an email to LSA about this, and they bounced her to admissions, though in a very friendly way.
@Arlmom2 Does your D got an invitation for Spring Welcome Day instead? Amaizing Blue has very limited spots.
Going to admitted students day friday. Still hoping for a little bit in the form of merit. S was accepted in December I think? He received Regents for In state but nothing else yet.
@billcsho Thanks for the response. She doesn’t seem to have been invited to anything other than the regular admitted student days that are scheduled for March and April. She’s checking with admissions, and I’ll post what I find out.
I’m getting a little worried about merit aid. I applied to LSA and expected to get at least the Regent’s Scholarship for the top 500 in-staters, but I didn’t get it. My stats are in this thread at post #24: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1721049-class-of-2019-university-of-michigan-ea-results-thread-stats-p2.html. I’ve heard nothing from Michigan about merit aid. Anyone have any thoughts?
I’ll probably call to ask if I still have a chance at merit aid (and ask if most of the scholarships have already been given out), but I don’t want to sound like an annoying pest with an entitlement mentality.
My son was admitted EA to CoE and we hoping for one of the merit scholarships. From what I have seen posted here, it appears that ship has sailed and he will not receive anything. In looking at the financial aid info on WA, he did get a $9000 grant, which I assume is based on our EFC. So, this would most likely go away next year when we only have on child in school.
Disappointing, but his final decision my become easier as we can cross some schools off due to affordability.
Ryan33 - I think Michigan will get crossed of many a list due to the money.
@Ostinato1689 You are a strong candidate. Perhaps it is due to homeschooling that they cannot really compare you with other in state students for the Regent Scholarships. If you do not get the Regent Scholarship, then your chance for other merit scholarships would be even lower. Don’t be disappointed, you can apply to departmental scholarships next year.
Personally. I wouldn’t be banking on future scholarships…they are likely more limited and, therefore, much more competitive!
@Ostinato1689, both Students #1 &2 in my Post#4 (same thread) were homeschooled. I wonder if UMich somehow overlooked the homeschooled kids’ qualifications. Anyway, both ended up with Umich’s largest scholarship (Student#2 ended up having multiple which were enough to cover full-tuition).
So, perhaps you should check further with someone at UMich for this possibility. Good luck!
@billcscho - that’s a good point - maybe that’s why. I’ll look into departmental scholarships.
@parentof2018 - those anecdotes are so encouraging! I will definitely call the university tomorrow and ask about merit scholarships, and keep following up later.
Thank you for the encouragement. I’ve also been applying to a lot of outside scholarships, hoping they would make U of M affordable.
Since we’re planning on sending our D to UM no matter what, we accepted (LSA Honors) the other night and paid the $300 deposit. I wasn’t sure if doing so would hurt her chances at a merit scholarship, but when I asked the college counselor we used (who really knows her stuff and I trust what she’s telling me is true) she said to not wait and to accept right away. She said merit scholarships are decided by mid-April and that it’s actually to our advantage to accept and send in the deposit first. (Our son got a merit scholarship 5 years ago and it came well after he accepted.)
My D emailed her UM rep and asked about it, and the rep replied that merit scholarships are given out “throughout the winter.”
D2 got invited to Amaizin’ Blue today (via email), just when I assumed she hadn’t been included. She also received the paper confirmation of the Jean Fairfax award; I don’t know whether getting that on top of the LSA $20K/yr award is what put her over the threshold for Amaizin’ Blue, but I suspect it’s possible.
Now she has to decide what to do with the double conflict she already has for that weekend. But that’s a great problem to have at this point in the process! Thanks again for your help.
What is the Amaizin Blue weekend? Who gets invited and what happens during the weekend? Son is going to the shipman scholarship weekend but I have no idea about the Amaizin blue. So many different programs!
@Arlmom2 Congrats!!! I think they may be more selective for OOS to be invited to one of these scholarship winnner welcome programs. Amaizin’ Blue would even cover your air travel if you request. Make sure you response as soon as possible.
@Musicmom2015 Amaizin’ Blue is an extended weekend program to welcome top scholarship winners to visit. I think they would only invite the top students to go to one of these programs only. For the Amaizin’ Blue last year, students stayed in a hotel at Ann Arbor for the first night. There were some evening programs after dinner. I think it was bowling last year. The next day was a special campus tour that included a private visit to the Michigan Stadium and took a group picture in the middle of the field. The second night was staying in dorm with current students. The third day would join the Spring Welcome Day.
