anyone else just get this email? Just curious if it was sent out to everyone, or only people above certain test score cutoffs, etc, to get some gauge of the competition applying for it would involve.

Dear Glue!:

Congratulations on your admission to UC Santa Cruz. I hope that you decide to join us.

I would also like to invite you to apply for the Merrill College Frosh Scholars Program, a 22-student program that includes special courses for the fall and spring quarters, and that is described in detail on the web at admissions.ucsc.edu/merrill_scholars.pdf.

The Merrill College Frosh Scholars Program is an opportunity for a specially selected group of students to study, work, and live together in an intensive mini-curriculum that includes unique course work supplemented with both outside-of-class activities and service work in a nearby elementary school. In addition to a more rigorous section of the Core course, Merrill Frosh Scholars have the opportunity to take a special seminar-style course with a Merrill Fellow faculty member in the area of his or her expertise or most recent research. Outside of the classroom, students will join together for a variety of co- and extra-curricular activities.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the program, please choose Merrill College as your first-choice college. From among this group, I will ask interested students who meet our selection criteria to apply to the Merrill College Frosh Scholars Program by writing an essay.

If you have questions about the program, please feel free to call either myself at (831) 459-2246, or Merrill College Provost Assistant Connie Creel at (831) 459-5836. We can put you in touch with students who are currently in?or who have now passed through?the Program, if you would like. Please let me know if you plan to visit our campus during the spring quarter so that you can visit the Scholars Seminar, provided we have space that day.

I look forward to hearing from you and send you my very best wishes.

Sincerely,

Lourdes Mart?nez-Echaz?bal
Provost of Merrill College
