Message from Berkeley Chancellor About #2 Ranking

"So does that mean that if I get into UCSF Medical, I should turn it down in favor of Stanford Medical on the grounds that UCSF is not well-rounded? What if I get into Johns Hopkins Medical or WUSL Medical - should I also turn that down for Stanford Medical on the grounds that Stanford University is more well-rounded than Johns Hopkins University or WUSL?"

I dunno about you guys, but I'd DEFINITELY take Stanford Med over UCSF, WUSTL, Johns Hopkins, etc. The only school I might possibly choose over Stanford Med is Harvard Med. But that's still a tough choice for me.

If you were interested in practicing medicine, then the Stanfurd degree will give you more prestige.

However, if you are serious about medicine and want get an MD or PhD for medical RESEARCH, given the same packages for each school, 90% of graduate researchers would pick UCSF over Stanfurd to do serious AIDS cure kind of research. Ask around if you want to hear directly from people in the industry. They would know best.

rooster, here you're crossing some universities which are not below Stanford when you're referring to Medical Schools. Specifically, Harvard MS, UCSF, and John Hopkins are famous for having the greatest medical schools.

FYI

The Honor Roll

When U.S. News identifies the top hospitals in 17 specialties every year, a handful (only 14 this year) are singled out as Honor Roll centers—hospitals that excelled not in one or two specialties but in six or more. Rank in the Honor Roll is based on total points: Hospitals got 2 points for ranking at or near the top in a specialty and 1 point for the next rung down (details below)

1.Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore

--- 32 points in 16 specialties

2.UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles

--- 23 points in 14 specialties

Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

--- 18 points in 10 specialties

University of California, San Francisco Medical Center

--- 18 points in 10 specialties

University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle

--- 17 points in 10 specialties

University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor

--- 13 points in 9 specialties

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

--- 11 points in 6 specialties

Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Stanford, Calif.

--- 10 points in 7 specialties

Rooster08, if you really feel that Stanford Medical School is a better medical school for you than the med-schools at UCSF, WUSL, or JHU, then I guess it's your right to have your own opinion. However, if you are trying to claim that Stanford Medical is better than the other 3, wooh, well, I guess you have the right to have that opinion, but you have to concede that that's not exactly a mainstream opinion. Don't get me wrong, Stanford Medical School is strong, but if you are trying to say that it's stronger than a place like Johns Hopkins Medical, well, I think you will find very few people, even students at Stanford Medical, who would be willing to agree with you.

You're entitled to have your own opinions, but you're not entitled to have your own facts. And the fact is, that the bulk of respected medical-school rankings (not all the rankings, but the bulk) would rank UCSF, WUSL, and JHU Medical over Stanford Med. So if you want to say that Stanford Med is better than those other 3, that's your prerogative, but you have to acknowledge that you hold a minority position.

No of course not. I know JHU, UCSF, WUSTL, and Harvard Med are ranked higher than Stanford Med. But personally I'd choose Stanford Med over any of the others except for Harvard Med because I love this place.

rooster: ur rankings are insane. anyone with half a brain would choose penn over dartmouth/columbia/duke/caltech etc., and i'd choose it over princeton, yale, stanford, and harvard. i'd also choose berk over dartmouth, duke, brown, cornell etc.

Rohan, with the exception of Wharton, anyone with half a brain knows that penn is the worst ivy.

rtkysg, Maybe I have half a brain but I honestly believe that Penn is better than Dartmouth and Brown. It is a notch below Columbia though. Many people may not agree but I actually believe Cornell is a better school than all Ivy's but the "big three" as well. Then again, it all depends on the department.

Penn is the doormat ivy. I would even choose Berkeley over Penn. Dartmouth trumps Penn

no way. dartmouth, cornell, and brown are nothing in comparison. penn is ranked way higher (not only first for biz, but fourth overall)

University of Penn is not recognized as a great university. Dartmouth and Brown and even Cornell are more widely known and respected. Nobody honestly believes University of Penn is the 4th best college. Maybe Penn State.

"rtkysg, Maybe I have half a brain but I honestly believe that Penn is better than Dartmouth and Brown."

Shyboy, I was just being sarcastic, the lower Ivies are pretty much the same, it depends on, as you said, the departments and the eyes of the beholders. :)

Rooster, your ranking Cal out of the Top 10 and Michigan out of the top 15 shows how severely distorted your opinion of state universities is. Cal is definitely one of the top 10 universities in the country...some would even argue it is a top 5 university. If Cal were given sufficient funding, it would be one of the top 2 or 3 universities in the country...full stop.

Michigan is definitely a top 15 university in the country...some would even argue it is a top 10 university.

CotoDeCasa, I like some of your rankings...but putting Harvard at #10 for academic rankings is crazy. Harvard belongs among the top 4 or 5 academically speaking. It is amazing in all the sciences, humanities, languages, social sciences and international studies. Harvard's only weakness is Engineering.

And leaving Michigan out of the top 10 (even the top 5) professional schools would wrong.

Michigan's Business School is ranked anywhere between #1 and #10. Most would rank it somewhere between #5-#8.

Michigan's school of Engineering is ranked anywhere between #5 and #8.

Michigan's Law School is ranked anywhere between #2 and #7.

Michigan's Medical School is ranked anywhere between #5 and #10.

Michigan is the only university in the US that is ranked in the top 10 in all 4 professional programs (Stanford is the other).

I would say as far as professional schools are concerned, Michigan is somewhere between #3 and #6.
