Metcalf

They gave me a single (yay) in Metcalf. Just wondered what the positives negatives of of living on Pembroke/Metcalf Hall are. I read a review where the person said Pembroke is antisocial (I’m sure he meant asocial but whatever). I sure hope that’s not the case.

Pembroke is plenty social.

But anyone who claims that a certain dorm is a certain way (e.g. oh that's the party floor) is misguided because it's all dependent on who lives there, which clearly changes year to year.

You are at an advantage living in a freshman dorm as a transfer. Granted, you aren't around as many transfers, so won't know your transfer community as well, but will be able to expand your friend base substantially, because unlike in other dorms, you will be surrounded by doe eyed freshman, just like you're a doe eyed transfer! It makes it easy to make friends. I was in a similar situation, in a single in Andrews.

How do you know which dorms are freshman, upper, etc

reslife.brown.edu

metcalf is awesome, dude.

yeah, ive been there (to that site). heard good things as well. but on that site i didnt find any frosh/upper dorm especially for metcalf. i was told by a transfer counselor that metcalf is mostly upperclassmen

You may be right. I think I was thinking of Morris, not Metcalf. But still, do what you can to meet the people in your dorm! Most brown students are very friendly and will invite you to be freinds with them.

Metcalf is an upperclassmen dorm but it is connected to Andrews which is a freshman dorm. From this year's lottery results, I think the majority, if not all of Metcalf went to seniors. I think it also has an all-female and a quite floor this year too. In general, they're nice dorms, roomy, but bring lots of powerstrips because I don't think the rooms have very many outlets. If you want to meet people, go to the Gate once classes start. It is the social hub of Pembroke and a great hang out place.

the gate? ive been living on my own for about 5 years so I have plenty of powerstrips already. also not ALL of metcalf went to seniors - since I'm a junior :)

the gate is the snack bar type place on pembroke. It has pizza, paninis, sandwiches, and ppackaged food like odwalla bars, ritz bitz,, you get the idea. It's a social place, couches and tvs and whatnot. It's also a great place to work, if you need a job.

i will need a job, but i make decent money now so im hoping i get more than barely above min. wage at brown

speaking of jobs, how easily can freshmen get jobs on campus? also, how much do students typically spend on books and supplies in one year?

probably won't happen, renix

it's easy to get a job. for instance, anyone can work at BuD's (dining services). It sucks though.

depends what kind of job you're looking for. BUDS accepts employees all through the year. But if you're looking for something else, apply as early as possible, as most of the good jobs go fast. Go here for a list of job postings: http://financialaid.brown.edu/JobX_FindAJob.aspx

As for books, it really depends on the kinds of classes you take. I've gone semesters where I've spent under a hundred, but many of my friends in the sciences spend several hundred on theirs.

thanks for posting that link..ive been trying http://careerdevelopment.brown.edu/studentemp.htm - and it doesn't work!

Claysoul: just because you got fired from BuDS doesn't mean you should slam it. You were a completely irresponsible and inconsiderate employee. Most people find BuDS to be a very positive experience.

I quit

Who are you?

What do you claim to know about my situation?

Ok I know who you are...

I quit, if anyone should know that, you should

I hope you're not still begrudged that I showed up late the very frist day, as I was given incorrect information from someone in the BuDS office.

I broke my nose and had subsequent migraines and had to have surgery and couldn't work. Hello!?! I got other warnings prior to that from other MEDICAL problems.

I've worked i a ton of food service places and never have I had such an unpleasent and inflexible experience as at BuDS. I practically had to beg to get my surgery date off of work. I am completely within my rights...or whatever...to utter something as inconsequential as "it sucks" on this inconsequential forum...in fact no one probably even would have noticed if you hadn't drawn attention to it.

You may have told us you quit, but when you failed to work your two weeks' notice, that was put in the records being fired, with all the relevant consequences.

Most definitely not. That was a pretty clear miscommunication.

The reason you got warnings for you medical problems was purely because you failed to provide us with a doctor's note. The policy is extremely clear on this point, and you were reminded several times.

BuDS is extremely flexible...just not so flexible that you can call up a half hour before your shift starts and say, "by the way, I'm not coming in." If you are sick, have migraines, whatever, it is courteous to tell someone as soon as you think you may not be able to work. The staffing model at the Ivy Room (I can't speak for the Blue Room) was designed so that one person per night could beg off work and everything would still be functional. That assumes, however, that workers will be responsible enough to give us some advance notice, which in your case, never happened.

" You may have told us you quit"

I'm pretty sure that's all it takes.

The difference is that if you quit, you can come back anytime. If you're fired, you're ineligible for re-hire for a year, and you will not be able to use BuDS as a reference. (I mean, you can...but you'll probably shoot yourself in the foot if you do.) Really, just give two weeks' notice and all is fine.
