If anybody on this site has ever had any experience with the Honors College at Miami Dade, please feel free to share. How was it like? Academically, socially, and personally? What bits of advice, no matter the magnitude or topic, can you offer to an incoming student? Anything helps!
Hello,
I’m a current Honors College student and I have to say that I’m loving it. At first I was very weary of the program since I had originally wanted to go out of town after my senior year of high school but I know that this program i going to open even more doors for me after my two years. Academically, some of my classes are rigorous while others not so much. The only difficult thing was really adjusting to the new style of classes where your entire grade could solely be based on two or three exams. Also the stress of maintaining a high GPA can take its toll but it’s well worth it when you get to graduate with your AA debt free. Socially, it may not be the “traditional” college experience but I personally think it’s what you make out of it. I still maintain a strong connection with my friends from high school and new friends I’ve made at the college (honors and regular). If you put yourself out there and join a club or hang out at the lounge, you shouldn’t worry about feeling unwelcome.
The advice I’d give you is to simply put yourself out there and always leave room for fun. The college and its faculty have so many resources at their disposal that they can get you that internship or scholarship if you go out and make an effort to capture it. Apply for the Washington, Salzburg, and even study abroad trips! Lastly, please make time for pizza with your friends or a movie night with yourself. College in general is demanding and you need some form of stress release every once and a while.
I wish you luck!
Thank you for your reply. It’s been a real eye opener, in a good way!
