I’m starting to look for schools for our D21 and I think Miami checks some boxes as a safety for her. She wants small class size but big school spirit and a “fun” environment (read not too intellectual). She’s a very good student and I expect she will score well on standardized tests. She’s seen Davidson and William and Mary when we visited with our son and she liked them but we will need some safer options. She likes the idea of Greek life and she’s very social.
What does Miami’s Honors College offer? Honors housing? Smaller sections? More research opportunities? She’s not sure of major since it’s so early but I can say for sure that she won’t be a business or STEM major. My best guess would be History, English, Psychology…something like that.
I’d love to hear from students and parents of students who are currently in the honors college.
@homerdog I have a FS at Miami who is in the Honors program. They offer honors housing (this year in newly renovated dorms), priority registration (this is surprisingly important perk!), and lots of honors student programming (social activities, dinners, etc.). The program requires student’s to enroll in one honors course per semester, and my son took an honors journalism course that he really enjoyed. Next semester, he has chosen an honor architecture course that sounds really interesting.
My son is a smart, social, outgoing person and is planning to go through rush next semester. He opted NOT to live in the honors dorm (against my better judgement), but has made some great friends and made honor roll his first semester (even with taking the dreaded 5 hour Calculus course!). He has met with his honors advisor (extra advisor in addition to major advisor) twice during the first semester, but I don’t think he has really engaged with any other honors activities. He is active more in sports, student rec offerings and Greek life/social activities.
