Miami University of Ohio for biology/premed/theater?

My D got an incredible offer from Miami of Ohio - full ride, Honors Program, Academic Scholars program. It’s a lovely campus with a cute town adjacent. We’re still waiting on other offers so we’re not pressed to make a decision. Still, it would be good to have some input opinions from people who know more about the school than we do.

Miami seems to be known mostly for its business school, and it has strong education and engineering as well I think. It also seems to be very preppy, white, and conservative… My D is quirkier and is used to a more diverse and liberal crowd.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I’ve never thought of MiamiO as being conservative. Is it?

For premeds, it’s fine…more than fine.

I need to go and look, but isn’t its bio dept within zoology? Or am I confused? Won’t matter to med schools.

Has good research opps. Doesn’t the Academic Scholars program include research opps?

To be honest, I don’t think any premed should be a theatre major. Being premed means lots of studying, getting A’s, and theater can be sooooo time demanding that I don’t think a premed would survive.

Too late to edit above.

Now there is a Dept of Biology. I think at one time there were two separate depts…one Botony and one Zoology…but it appears that they’re now united under Dept of Bio. sorry for any confusion.

BTW…congrats to your DD on her full tuition scholarship. Awesome!

Miami would be just fine for a student who wants to go to med school. Miami is rather heavily Greek with around 30+% of the students being involved in fraternities and sororities. It is undergraduate focused. Quirky is not how I’d describe it but I’m sure she’d find many kindred spirits. It seems to draw many of its students from suburban OH so it may seem more heterogeneous than schools located in cities or some LACs or state flagships. It is drawing more students from OOS. Here in Ohio It is considered on about the same level academically as Ohio State. I can’t speak to the theater program at MU. It is a beautiful campus and would prepare your child well for med school. Congratulations on the scholarship!

this is really helpful - thank you all!

Miami has very good voice and music programs so I would assume they also have a good theater program. I know a poster from a couple of years ago was very happy with Miami’s premed prep for her D who is now in Med School.

“so it may seem more heterogeneous”. That should have been homogeneous. Back in the 1980’s it was coined one of the “public Ivys” a term that has been co opted by many schools. It is the most expensive public university in Ohio and is treated as a bit of a hybrid between public and private. It reminds me of the University of Pittsburgh in that regard.

I attended when it was coined a “Public Ivy” and while it was really homogeneous and conservative back then, I believe it has come a long way in that regard. I wasn’t a typical sorority girl, but I found friends with the same attitudes and enjoyed my four years there immensely. Congrats to your daughter! If you go, be sure to stop by Bruno’s pizza on High Street for a slice! So yummy

Congratulations…do you mind sharing her stats? Thank you

sure: 4.0 GPA w/ several APs at competitive STEM high school. 35 ACT.

I’m in the same shoes as your daughter (although she has much better academics). I loved Miami, but I am worried about the stereotype that people are preppy… I’m not like that at all and I wonder if I’ll fit in at a school where this is commonplace.

@Mer101341 Miami is a wonderful school and there are all different types of people on campus. Chances are you’ll find people like you. Not everyone is a preppy sorority girl or frat boy!
