MICA Questions

there are also many more than the ones listed on that website, but they're the ones you are made eligible for automatically when you do at least one application for the competitive scholarships

Yeah, I got an invite for scholarship finalists. If the open house ended up being for all accepted students and prospective students...hmm...a little misleading.

Thank you Caressemh and Patois. I was wondering how much I should keep my hopes up. :-)

My son was also invited to the program for scholarship finalists. The letter my son received said the enclosed agenda was specially for finalists and was different from the published agenda, so we knew it was part of an open house. He was assigned group B which followed the finalist agenda. However, everyone around me on the long line outside the Brown Building seemed to be a scholarship finalist.

Sunday was the 1st time I ever visited MICA (my husband and son had already seen it). I was so impressed. My son said he found the panel discussion in the auditorium to be very informative. I liked that we had an opportunity to visit classrooms and talk to teachers in the PM. The classroom for graphic design was packed.

Good Luck to Everyone!!!!

jocan - there were different programs for the different groups of students, like elma said.

there was an itinerary for prospective students, an itinerary for the general applicants, and one for the scholarship finalists. The scholarship finalists ate in the main building for lunch, everyone else ate in the meyerhoff. If it helps, I think there were only 3 or 4 classrooms converted to "lunchrooms" in main. So the scholarship finalists and their families would fill about 4 classrooms in the main building. That's about the closest approximate i can give, haha.

Wait did they actually give out scholarships at that open house? I told my counselor I wouldn't be able to go and she said I'd only be missing a tour and a few information sessions....

Anyway, they mailed out the sholarship/fin.aid letters today I think! :D

At the presentation they said, they still had one more meeting which going to take place the next day. The scholarships then had to be combined with financial aid. The packages would then be sent out by express mail and everyone should receive them by Sat.

So how many finalists do you estimate were at the Open House?

I have no idea -- at least 100, probably much more.
The lower part of the auditorium was full, and I have no idea how many people were in the balcony.

Did anyone hear today re: scholarships?

Our admissions rep said that letters would be sent out tomorrow.

Anyone hear today re: Merit awards?

Son got his aid package Saturday, actually. $20K academic scholarship and $10K Trustee scholarship, both over 4 years. Didn't receive any financial aid though, despite an EFC of $17K.

A little disappointed, as son won't be able to attend unless he commutes somehow.

How'd everybody else do?

I got: 12k Trustee scholarship, 8k NAHS scholarship, and 20k Academic Excellence scholarship (total of 40k) allocated over 4 years. I'm disappointed, but I think I can still make it work. I didn't get any financial "aid" except an unsubsidized stafford loan.

My son got something, but only a small dent of the total costs.

I know money makes the world go round, but I hope all the students here realize what an accomplishment it is to even get accepted into a school like Mica. You should all feel very proud of yourselves. With all your talents, I have no doubt that you all will do well in your careers regardless of where you attend college.

This has been a tough year for college acceptances. Many students with great grades and standardized test scores, many extra curriculars, and impressive recommendations did not even make their choice school.

I thought you'd get more than half if anyone would.
Now I don’t think MICA would be an option for us.
If you can post how exactly you are gonna make it work, great.
What do your parents say?

the schools that I'm considering are SAIC, MICA, SMFA, and Parsons/Lang (comined BA/BFA). I've been leaning towards SAIC, since I want to major in photography. MICA isn't well-know for it's photo department. however, I'm strongly reconsidering MICA, because they gave me a lot of money.

Trustee Scholarship - $52,000
Fanny B. Thalheimer - $20,000
(allocated over 4 years)

does anyone know anything about MICA's photo department??

Bears and dogs, I'm sorry about MICA for you guys. SVA was my first choice and it was heartbreaking not to afford it. MICA will still be a stretch but with some luck it will be attainable. I just emailed my appeal letter today. The admissions office said they have been getting a lot of calls regarding scholarships/aid. My counselor was in a meeting, but will call back this afternoon. My parents are witholding their thoughts until this whole scholarship matter is definitive.

I will have to take out some loans, and my parents will probably have to stretch a little harder than they intended, but I am banking on the hopes that
a.) they will redistribute the scholarships turned down by the kids who don't attend MICA
b.) my sophomore-senior years will be cheaper if I can earn some of their returning student scholarships and can become an RA (free housing)
c.) they will consider my appeal favorably

Were you given any need based aid? I wasn't aware you could try for more merit aid. Do you mind telling me how much aid you got from other
school(s)?

I wasn't given any need based aid, just an unsubsidized stafford loan of $3,500.

Sure, from other schools:

SVA - $12,500/year Silas Rhodes scholarship
Pratt - $13,000/year Presidential scholarship
SCAD - $20,000/year Presidential scholarship + $3,000/year (in recognition of Tennessee's Hope Scholarship)
SAIC - $2,000/year merit
Ringling - $1,000/year merit

What is your intended major, Caressemh?
