I'm a senior this year and I'm trying to make my final decisions on what schools to apply for. Money will be an issue for me. How good is Michigan on need-based scholarships. If it helps, I'm an OOS black female living with a single mom who makes about 70 k a year. From what I've seen I do think that I'm a good candidate for Michigan. My grades are good (4.2/3.95 gpa) my test scores could be better (29 ACT). Does any of that factor into financial aid?

OOS definitely hurts.

Black female living in a single parent home helps a lot though.

Plus your GPA looks pretty good, even though your ACT could be higher.

I’m not sure exactly how much Michigan will give you, I think you’d get something given your situation, but even if not you could clean up in independent scholarships I think.

What major are you looking at? Say engineering and I guarantee you’ll get money.

How is Michigan with need-based aid? Not that great tbh. Its a public univ that tends to be a worse with need based aid and it also happens to be the most expensive public univ.
For merit based aid? There are so many variables. Like what field, your accomplishments etc. I think if, you can though, try to get that ACT up just a little bit . A few points here and there could really be a big factor for some scholarship money. You are a good candidate for mich, just that money is sometimes hard to get at some of these highly populated schools.
OOS hurts too

There aren’t many black students at U of M and in Engineering (if that’s what you’re going for) there is a strong gender imbalance. You’re a pretty strong candidate regardless. I think the university will fight to get you and that you have a good shot at getting some substantial aid.

However, with everything in Freshman admissions, the amount of aid you get is highly random and you should expect that you might get nothing. But definitely apply and hope for a good offer.

And while your test scores are good enough to get you in, getting another point of two could really help you out in terms of your attractiveness to the school and thus, your chance at a good aid package.

I’ve been thinking about engineering, but I think I’m going to go the biology/pre-med route. Do think that would hurt my chances?

Apply EA tom improve your chances for FA.
