Michigan Community Scholars Program

I love community service in terms of tutoring other privileged elementary students because I used to be one myself. However, I don’t want hefty requirements and expectations for a program because honestly, I want better housing too. Is the program worth applying for?

The requirements aren’t too terrible. You have to take a 1-credit course (UC 102) that’s taught by the program Assistant Director. The course is a two hour once a week lecture plus a discussion section led by an MCSP RA. Tbh, the class is a joke. It only meets for half of a semester. There are two additional course requirements. You have to take an approved first year seminar (you have like 10 seminars to choose from). Most of them are interesting and cover one of your distribution requirements for graduation. You could always just take the first year writing seminar. The other requirement is a community service or social change course. Overall, I would say that the requirements are not restricting at all.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Hi. Thank you for your response! This is what I am 100% interested in. However, I just don’t want it to be the majority of my classes because I want to explore my options in LSA. I am currently writing my essay and it’s going great.

Awesome! I will be sophomore in the program next year. Hopefully I will get to see you in the fall. Best of luck to you!

Thanks
