My rising senior is interested in aerospace engineering and Michigan, of course, has a great program in aero. I am a Michigan alum and would love for him to end up in Ann Arbor but I am torn to have him even apply because we are OOS and cannot pay full freight for U of M. My question is should he bother applying on the outside chance he gets some merit aid? My feeling is he is not likely to get it. Here are his stats:

ACT: 33
GPA: 4.1 weighted, 3.9 unweighted
ECs: 4 years marching band with 2 years as section leader, 3 years regional Youth Wind Symphony, 4 years Jazz Band, 4 years Pep Band, Scouts, Academic Challenge (capt.), Rocket Club (2 years)
Other: Rensselaer Medal, likely Commended Scholar

Other than those stats, he's your average suburban middle class white teen-ager. We would need tuition to get down to about $35K to make it feasible.

Can any CCers out there who have had experience with the Michigan admission process help us out? Thanks!

I very much doubt he’ll get any merit aid as an OOS student. His stats are just barely above the 75%ile. But I have no direct knowledge. He would have a better chance of merit at Mich State (which might be anathema to you?) but I’m not sure how much of that goes to OOS students.

I was instate and I did not get merit aid at U of M neither did anyone else I know, but the process is probably different for OOS. Still there is no reason not to apply, just give it a shot because large scholarships do exist.

Well, arch-rivalry aside, I know for certain that OP’s son will receive “National Buckeye Scholarship” for OOS students at the very minimal with his stats for tOSU. FWIW, the school continues to improve academically, its Honors College 50%-tile ACT score = 32.5 as of this year.

Hope this helps…

Sparkeye, we are in Ohio so well aware of Ohio State. This Michigan grad would even be OK with her son going there after our visit in the Spring. Very impressed with the offerings. So, Erin’s Dad, MSU would not be hard to swallow if OSU is in the picture and will be a likely safety for us. Thanks for the comments. I am leaning toward not having him apply to UofM unless he really wants to give it a shot. Right now, he is not feeling strongly either way.
