University of Michigan Ann Arbor Merit Awards

Is anyone familiar with the timeline of these? My son was accepted into the engineering program in November. The paperwork said no additional applications were needed for merit scholarship consideration. We have an email into admissions, but do we assume no news is bad news?

He'll be studying Material Science and is accepted into U of IL Champaign (we're from IL), so they are comparable (I think), but he was interested in Michigan. The only way we'd consider Ann Arbor is if he received some merit aid (low chance on financial aid). His grades & ACT score are high (3.98 uw, 4.5 w, 34), so we thought he may have had a chance at some $?

He was also accepted into Wis & Penn St, if anyone wants to weigh in on Mat'l Sci programs or overall school choices.

Not sure how we could go wrong with IL, but he said he was most comfortable on the Ann Arbor campus, although he also understands that comfort level isn't worth an additional $25K/yr...

Be patient. My understanding is that UofM does not give merit scholarships along with admissions notification. Moreover, they do not give all merit scholarships out at once but rather periodically by different schools and departments between mid-December and April. There is still plenty of time. You may want to search “merit aid” on the UofM board, I believe I have seen a thread there which explains this in more detail than I am able to here. Hope this helps.

This was in early 2008, so my memory might be off a little…D1 wasn’t notified from LSA until shortly after we filed our FAFSA and PROFILE, probably third/fourth week of Febuary or so. We were not eligible for need, but UofM required the forms anyway for their merit awards. The form filings were probably coincidental, but I’ve heard the school can see what schools you send financials. As a recruiting tool, it worked. She loves Ann Arbor.

Thanks for the insights GreatWhiteNorth & easmesmom! We’re really looking forward to the FAFSA process :(.

Any thoughts on the value of MI vs IL, since even if he does get some merit, I’m sure MI won’t match in state tuition?

COA of UMich as an out-of-state student: $47,188

COA of UIUC as an in-state student: …$25,988

You’re right, a $25k difference. Unless UMich gives a big ol’ scholarship, I can’t believe it would be cost effective since UIUC is such a good school!

From UMich website:

**Recipients of most merit scholarships are notified by April 15. ** … Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.

What amounts in scholarships does UMich usually give to OOS students? $5k? $10k? $15k? more?
(I guess it’s hard to know from past experience because they say that amounts are subject to change. hmmm… frustrating! )

*He was also accepted into Wis & Penn St, *

Do you expect any financial help from Penn St? Do they give merit to OOS students? I know that they don’t give FA to OOS students?

UIUC is ranked #1 for **Materials **in the 2009 USNews book
UMich is #2
Berkeley is #3
Northwestern is #4

Three years ago, D1 got notification of a university-wide merit award at the end of Dec. She was initially notified about the Shipman at the end of Jan, which is probably when other College-based merit aid starts to be awarded.
