Does geographic diversity give me a notch up on admissions?
Im from Georgia... i dont think that many people apply to michigan from here than say Chicago

Actually, Michigan has a large contigent from Georgia. If you were from Montana or Wyoming or one of the Dakotas, I would say you may have an advantage, but Michigan enrolls between 50 and 10 Freshmen from Georgia each year.

Alexandre-just curious where you get your enrollment stats from. Does UofM publish that online anywhere? I've looked for enrollment and/or application statistics and can't find them anywhere.

I am not sure if Michigan publishes enrollment stats by state. I do know that Georgia is well represented. Some states, like Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming admit fewer than a handful of Freshmen each year. Most other states are well represented.

I know CA is the most represented state outside of the US (SD county alone sends about 70 students per year). Of course, CA is the most represented state at virtually every college... :/

Actually VC, I am pretty sure that NY is the most represented state at Michigan. And I think Illinois is #2. California is 3rd if I recall.

where do you get your stats alexandre?
(not trying to be critical... just wondering so i can check them out)

IDK, that's what my admissions rep told me (that CA is #1 outside the midwest). But maybe she is wrong...

North: Alexander is a college counselor in the Middle East, as well as a Michigan alum, so he has some strong UM connections. I'm guessing that's where he got his info...

thats cool
while i have your attention alexandre, one more question...
with 12 AP classes by graduation, how much will a 3.5-3.7 UW UMich GPA affect my chances? (thats low isnt it?)
(High SATs and pretty good EC's)

Is Hawaii considered underrepresented?

You want section 114. Stick to the reports for Fall, as this represent the bulk of an incoming freshmen class (Winter term will mainly be transfers and a few people starting late).

Well done Dilsky. The most well represented states by undergrads are:

1 Michigan (duh): 16,911

2 New York: 1,355

3 Illinois: 1,033

Those have been the best represented states by undergrads ever since I can remember.

4 California 667

5 New Jersey 664

6 Ohio 649

Another big drop

7 Pennsylvania 386

8 Maryland 361

9 Florida 253

10 Massachusetts 250

11 Connecticut 205

12 Texas 192

13 Minnesota 161

14 Georgia 138

15 Indiana 124

16 Missouri 118

17 Washington 104

18 District of Columbia 100

19 Colorado 97

19 Virginia 97

The least represented states. Applicants from those states may have a small advantage, but not as big as one would think. I mentioned some of them above:

1 Wyoming 4

2 South Dakota 6

3 North Dakota 7

4 Alaska 8

5 Mississippi 11

6 Montana 12

6 Idaho 12

6 West Virginia 12

9 Utah 15

10 Hawaii 16

10 Maine 16

10 New Mexico 16

13 Arkansas 17

14 Delaware 18

14 Louisiana 18

14 Vermont 18

17 Nebraska 20

17 South Carolina 20

In terms of international representation by undergrads:

1 South Korea 292

2 Singapore 156

3 Hong Kong 118

4 India 105

5 China (exlusing HK) 101

6 Malaysia 82

7 Canada 63 (I didn't realize that was considered international!)

8 Indonesia 57

9 Taiwan 53

10 United Arab Emirates 40 (yay!)

11 Japan 31

12 Pakistan 26

13 Thailand 22

14 Turkey 16

15 Germany 14

16 Mexico 13

17 Australia 9

17 Kuwait 9

19 France 7

19 Greece 7

19 Italy 7

19 Philippines 7

19 Saudi Arabia 7

19 Switzerland 7

By geographic area:

East Asia: 924

Subcontinental Asia: 135

Middle East (including Egypt, Israel and Turkey): 98

European Community (including Croatia, Cyprus, Iceland and Switzerland): 73

Central and Latin America (including the Caribbean): 63

Africa: 14

Oceana: 13

Eastern Europe and Ex-USSR: 8

I think as far as being states being underrepresented, you have to consider the populations of the respective states. It's not that surprising that there's only 4 people from Wyoming when the whole state only has ~600,00 people (last I checked).

I'm guessing that West Virginia number may drop further, heh.
