Michigan Financial Aid - OOS

I was accepted to University of Michigan as an Early-Action applicant. Although I am still waiting to hear back from multiple schools Michigan is definitely a contender due to their strength in engineering. (Interested in chemical engineering and a minor business)

A quick review of my stats are as follows - 4.74/4.8 GPA, Valedictorian, 2240 SAT, 750 CHEM, 650 MATH II (it was a rough day, regret not re-taking it), 33 ACT, strong ECs (Started school recycling program, ECO Club President, NHS, other leadership/community service), and strong recommendations.

Today I received my aid package which totaled 14k a year with only 8k coming from grants. I understand that for OOS aid will be lower, but I was expecting slightly more. It is ultimately my goal to not spend more than 30k a year on college (preferably less than 25k). I am also surprised because I received a 34k a year package from UVA (22k a year in grants) and an even more generous package from University of Delaware. (Note: I am interested in chemical engineering and a minor in business)

Does Michigan match offers like some private schools do? Or is the aid set in stone? It would be awesome if they matched my UVA offer. Anyone have any experience with Michigan financial aid or any information in general? I really love the school, but at this point in time its simply not a financial option especially when I know other top schools (if I get in) will cost much less (especially the Ivies).

Well here is what I know… We went to Campus Day at UM today and the Financial Aid breakout session was kind of a joke. He basically said, “we are one of the most expensive state schools in the nation (exact words) and we give very little money so go home and get on FastWeb or see if your uncle is a Shriner and they can give you a scholarship”. I do not lie… It was such a turn off. I KNOW they don’t give much money, but don’t have a session where people are coming to get answers and help and basically just tell them “you are SOL and we couldn’t care less.” Really kind of bizarre… So I would say the answer to your question is, what they offered is probably all you will get.

They won’t match it. Michigan has 1000 other kids accepted exactly like you that will pay the full 50 every year. It’s too bad but because we are a public school and they basically have to give a half scholarship to every in-state student, OOS kids aren’t left with that big of a pie to split.

And to the person above me, would you rather they just lie to you?? I mean you say people go in there looking for “answers,” by that I guess you mean how to get Michigan to give them more money, and in the end they’re probably not going to get more money. It’s what the financial aid department has to work with given the University’s public status.

No, I don’t want them to lie, but why bother even having that session if they are going to give you no more direction than I could get from a basic Internet search? Waste of time…

Unfortunately, since it is so prestigious, Michigan is very tight with their fiananical aid from what Michigan students have told me. You need to have an amazing application to even be considered for financial aid. You should be proud of yourself for getting into such a great program, but the rest of your options are still very promising. Best of luck!
