Michigan Highly ranked for innovation...

The University of Michigan is the world’s fifth-most innovative university, according to a survey released Wednesday by Reuters.

Stanford University topped the Reuters Top 100: The World’s Most Innovative Universities, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of Washington and UM.

Other Big Ten schools in the rankings are Northwestern University, No. 6; the University of Wisconsin, No. 8; the University of Illinois, No. 21; Ohio State University, No. 29; Purdue University, No. 32; the University of Minnesota, No. 42; Indiana University, No. 49; the University of Maryland, No. 54; Penn State University, No. 70, and Rutgers University, No. 91.

According to a news release from Reuters, the criteria used in the rankings “focused on academic papers, which indicate basic research performed at a university; and patent filings, which point to an institution’s interest in protecting and commercializing its discoveries.”
