Michigan Learning Communities?

In my acceptance package, there was a brochure that detailed the MLCs available to join. I am interested in possibly joining the MCSP or the University Mentorship. What I'm hoping to get out of these, if I joined, are a couple close friends that'll make the transition to Michigan from OOS easier. I've searched about these on the Internet and sure they seem appealing, however only so much can be shown through paragraph descriptions and a picture thumbnail. If anyone here has experience with these or knows about someone that did them, could you please explain them to me a little more? Thanks

The mentorship program pretty much puts you in a peer group with a peer advisor and a faculty advisor. Your peer advisor would organize some events (such at pizza outings, etc) with your peer group. It’s pretty cool since you’ll have a group of friends who share your interests (or don’t share your interests, depending on which kind you say you prefer in your application) and a peer advisor you can turn to for questions at any time.
I don’t think it’s a learning community, just a program for first year students.

I’ve got experience with the Michigan Research Community, and I’d strongly suggest you look into that if you are interested in taking advantage of the crazy awesome types of research going on at Michigan.

The mentorship program can be hit or miss. You are put in a group of about a half dozen students. The program is only as good as you and the other people make it. Often it doesn’t work because the students who are in it decide they don’t need because they have made friends elsewhere.

I would look into the Movin Makers program. This is based in the dorm. You move into the dorm a few days early and you help the other students move into the dorm. It gets you to campus early and gives you a chance to meet people before you get bogged down in class work. There is a volunteer requirement but it is not too bad.
