Michigan Music Theatre Program

My s is at mPulse 2013 & fell in love with UofM! He said that of the 40 kids that went to mPulse 2012 only 3 were accepted to the university! YIKES! He has taken ballet for 5 years, plays piano, strong vocals & has been in 13 productions - including some leads & commercials. He has been at Stage Door Manor & Interlochen & he has a monolog/audition coach; so I think he is set on the audition side. HOWEVER, what about academics - are the Michigan high academic standard the same for musical theatre/school of music students that they are for an engineering student (for example)? Concerned about his 26 ACT score

ACT at 26 is very low for any schools at UMich except for recruitment.

Obviously the audition and portfolio play a big role in the admissions process for Arts applicants. However, students take classes in other subjects and often change their majors after arriving at college, as a result most schools want their Arts candidates to at least be ‘in the neighborhood’ statistically speaking.

As your son noted, the Music Theater program is extremely competitive and is filled with some amazingly talented performers (I know because my wife and I regularly attend the performances). You need to make it as easy as possible for the admissions office. A spectacular audition might get extra support from the Arts Program but combining that with an ACT closer to 29 and a 3.6 UWGPA would go a long way to increasing his chances.
