Michigan or PSU or UVA?

Which is the better choice?

Michigan Econ, PSU Finance or UVA Econ?

Michigan econ.......

Depends what you want to do with your econ degree but id say UVA. Its an amazing school. And since you want to do Finance - UVA has the second best undergrad business school in the country. (As rated by businessweek - more rep. in that regard than usnwr)

And I have no bias- since Im not attending any of them

I didn't get UVA finance or UMich finance so I would have to chose Econ at those two schools vs finance at PSU.

UVA Finance you apply to McIntire for your junior year. No-one goes directly in. (I think Mich is similar in that regard)

Yeah that's true. But in case I don't get into McIntire or Ross, I would have to chose Econ. These two schools are so evenly ranked that its hard to chose between the two!!

Well have you visited either? I did- and UVA won me over from the start. The people and school culture is very different from Mich (ina way that fit me better)- but you wont be able to decide without experiencing both.

They are both great- so you really cant go wrong at either. The only issue I had at Mich was the size- but thats to be expected froma "big" 10 school.

I actually don't mind the big size (since I'm at PSU right now) but I value diversity. I also like clean college campuses with open spaces and with a semi-urban feel to it.

Michigan offers me diversity. UVA offers me a better campus. It's still a tough decision!!

Go with your gut...or flip a coin! Hehe!!!

I have no insight towards the situation other than you just need to visit Michigan, Virginia, and make a decision.

However, congrats MightyNick! Glad to see the acceptances rolling your way this time around!

I remember you posted about this a while ago. You had like a 3.9 gpa at Penn State's business school. I would definitely stay at Penn State since you didn't get into the Business programs at UVa or Michigan. You are going to get great recruiting offers because of your GPA. At UVa and Michigan, you'd be "just another guy" in the Econ department. The business departments at those schools get priority over Econ students in terms of job offers.

On the other hand, if you really don’t like Penn State and prefer the atmosphere better at Michigan or UVa (though it’s pretty similar to Penn State), then go to those schools.

If you like Penn State, then you should absolutely stay.

I've visited Michigan and heard from a quite a few people that UVA's campus is gorgeous.

I think Penn States quite different from Michigan and UVA when it comes to student body. And there's a reason why PSU is ranked the #2 party school in the nation. While I like the campus and have made a few good friends there, I don't really like the frat boy scene and excessive alcohol drinking. I really feel like I'm the minority there on the weekends because I don't go to parties. On first impression, the Michigan student body seems smarter. Since a lot of the students must be smart, I hope they're not stuck up and arrogant though.

I know that b-school students get the attention of recruiters more than Econ students, but I'm sure at a school like UVA or UM Econ students can get good job offers even with GPA's around 3.5, because they're the target schools with good Liberal Arts programs. If you're doing Econ at PSU then its a different story.

Also, there's something about PSU that I just don't like. I mean, I have a good GPA and some good friends but I haven't found my experience to be fulfilling. Yeah, getting a good GPA makes me happy but teacher's give huge curves coz 80% of the students in my classes were dumbasses. The campus is quite homogenous too and I feel as if wherever I go on campus I'll meet the same kinds of people - carefree white alcoholics (no offence)!!! But then again, I haven't experienced UM/UVA life yet so I can't be certain when I say it'll be different at those universities.

Well your gonna have to go with your gut after you vist UVA- but you said in your post that the "fratboy" scene bothers you. Both UVA and Mich have big party scenes- though it isnt the ONLY option.

Best of Luck

Well it sounds like you probably should transfer, since Penn State doesn't seem great socially for you.

Michigan and UVa are quite different. Like Penn State, Michigan is a very large school, though not as big (UM ~25,000 undergrads vs. PSU 36,000 undergrads). The diversity at Michigan is outstanding (and not just based on race). You have people from many different social economical classes. As long as you are proactive, you shouldn't have a problem finding your niche. Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns around. Another negative (besides the size of the school), is the weather. It can get pretty cold at Michigan in the winter.

UVa is also an outstanding school. The campus isn’t nearly as big and it’s a very nice sized school (14,000 undergrads). The campus is beautiful too. The students at UVa tend to be quite wealthy and there are definitely a lot of preppy people at the school. Greek life is huge at UVa too, about 30 % of the students are involved in it, so it kind of dominates much of the social scene. That said, you don’t absolutely have to go Greek, but many do.

I’d suggest visiting UVa too, but Michigan may be a better fit for you.

worriedstudent, is that 36,000 for penn state in general or just university park?

anyway, you better check out uva to be safe, but it sounds like Michigan is the way to go...

Thanks for the advice guys!!

It's 36,000 in University Park.

I'm gonna check out UVA for sure. It's not the preppiness or the wealthy students that bother me. It's only the hardcore partying that gets on my nerves (a little bit of partying is fine...heck even I've done that a few times in my life hehe).

Just University Park (the main school). There are ~43,000 total students at Penn State - UP. There are ~84,000 students when totaling for all of the campuses.

Honestly man, the party has not affected me at all here. During the weekends, i just didn't go out. Why would you care about what other people are doing? This cretainly doesn't seem to be affecting you based on your gpa. You got in UVA after all? Congrats man!

I also despise the hedonistic/flirtatious white guys around campus, but you don't have to hang out with them.

It seems you are ambitious to get in the best ranked school no matter what, in which case UVA is a no brainer.

"It seems you are ambitious to get in the best ranked school no matter what, in which case UVA is a no brainer."

Care to explain what you mean? Is UVA ranked that much higher than Michigan? Is it ranked higher than Michigan at all?

They are tied, but I would say in the eyes of layman and employers, U of Virginia is more prestigious.

Not to mention the undergraduate student body is much smaller and it is cheaper.
