The above link has an excellent overview of MSU and provides you with a lot of photos of the campus. The site also has a comments area where students and alumni can post their impressions of the school.

My nephew will be a junior this Fall and has enjoyed his time at MSU. I went to UMich years ago and never visited the MSU campus until my nephew was accepted.

The MSU campus is beautiful and huge. The Cedar River runs through the campus and adds to the natural beauty of the area.

Re: your questions

(influence): My impression (from speaking with my nephew) is that MSU students are very friendly and you shouldn't have any problems making friends. If you are asking if fellow students will introduce you to bad habits, I have not seen this with my nephew (who, along with his roommate, drink green tea). I can't speak about the professors and how they interact with their students.

(the surrounding town: East Lansing): the area just outside the central campus is OK. I would consider it like most Midwestern towns...nothing really stands out in my mind. If you are coming from one of India's larger cities, East Lansing will be nothing like that.

(girls): Before being accepted, my nephew and I visited the MSU campus for a parent/prospective student tour given by the school (which took place on the first day of the Fall term). As our group was given a guided tour of the campus by a couple of students, I couldn't help but notice that the coeds(young women) were very attractive. I also noticed that there were thousands of students walking around looking for their classes. This is a very big university.

A month or so later, we went back on a Saturday for a SETI meeting (students interested in "Science, Engineering, Technology and Information"). We gathered in a large lecture hall where half the prospective students were women...again very attractive.

(diversity): MSU has a large number of Asian students. Mostly Chinese/Korean and Indian. There is an International Center at MSU so you shouldn't have any problems finding other Indian students.
5: (professors) My nephew likes the professors that he had. Much depends on your field of study.

(snow): Thanks to global warming, Michigan winters seem to be a lot milder than when I was growing up. It is still cold: probably less than what it might be along the Indian/Pakistani border region in the mountains. Snow levels are typically a couple of inches to say 6". The school is pretty good about clearing the roads and sidewalks on campus so this isn't a problem. You will need a warm winter coat and gloves.

(facilities): I've been to one of the schools libraries and it was a typical American college library (probably built in the 50's or 60's). Many of the Science and Engineering buildings are relatively new and are very nice...built in the modern style. The dorm rooms that I've seen are OK. They are small for two people (12'x15'). Dorms are not like hotel rooms.

(campus food): When I moved my nephew into school, we were given a free luch at his dorm. I thought the food was pretty good. Everything was served buffet style. After my nephew spent some time on campus, I asked him about the food and he said it was just OK (meaning it was edible). The quality of the food depends on the dorm you are assigned. Some dorms seem to have better food than others. If you have a student meal plan, you can eat at any of the dorms. My nephew hears that food at the International Center is very good. Outside of campus, you have a lot of restaurants to choose from (including Indian). I wouldn't consider them to be gourmet...

(bike?): a bike can be handy to get around campus. The university has a lot of buses that can quickly take you from one part of campus to another. A lot depends on the dorm you are assigned to and where your classes are. My nephew could walk to all of his classes. A good friend of his had a dorm located on the outskirts of the campus and had to take the bus to many of his classes.

I hope this helps you. MSU is an excellent school and you will learn a lot and make many friends. You should consider asking your questions under the MSU Colleges section of CC for more detailed information. Unfortunately, summer term has started and not that many students are around who might give you more information...

MSU had it's start as an agriculltural school in the early 19th. Century. A benefit is the school has it's own dairy store on campus that sells great ice creme. The milk comes from the school's cow herd.

Good luck at MSU!
