Microeconomics or Macroeconomics?

Registration for spring will be upon us soon and my daughter needs to take either Micro OR Macroeconomics for her major (health science). She must take one of those, not the government class. Since this is not of a particular interest to her she would really like some insider information as to which is the least painful (least work, easier to do well) of the two. For spring, she could take Microeconomics with either Mchone, Gibbs or Martin OR Macroeconomics with Euzent or Moore (no other profs will fit into her schedule). She is leaning towards Micro with Gibbs as he seems to be rated similarly (on Ratemyprofessors) to Euzent and the time of class is better for her but she really would like to know if she is better off with macro or a different professor. Anyone??

S never had to take macro because he AP’d out of that one, but he did take micro. He had Glenn Harrison. He had Scroggins for intermediate micro, but he also teaches eco 2023. S has really liked him, too. S feels they both know what they’re talking about, and they’re not boring. Harrison’s more essay based, and Scroggins’ is more “problems” oriented. Sorry I can’t help you with the specific profs you are looking at.

Yes, the profs that you mentioned are not on the spring 2010 list (only the ones I mentioned are possible for my D). D is into science, not into economics (didn’t like it much in high school) so she is hoping to take the “better” of the two options. Thanks for trying though.

I’ll be taking AP Micro this year (in high school) and I’m currently in AP Macro. Macro covers more general topics about economics and micro is a lot more specialized, and, my teacher says, harder. I don’t know if this also applies to college courses but I’m assuming since UCF counts the APs to opt out of those classes they’re about the same difficulty.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for trying but no, high school micro/macro or even micro/macro at any other college dosen’t compare to UCF. They are all different. My elder daughter took both at UF and at her school Micro was significantly easier than Macro. It all depends on the school and the professor. I am hoping that some upperclassmen at UCF will chime in here on what the deal is at UCF.

Thanks for starting this thread. D shyed away from taking Micro or Macro freshman year and is waiting until sophmore year. Any info would be beneficial to her too! :)

I’m taking Macro online with Euzent and it’s really easy but I find her really annoying. Reading the book is usually enough for me to understand the material and she gives extra credit on the tests. I didn’t study for the first test and got an 84 plus the 7 extra credit points. She lets you bring an index card full of notes to the test too. We have about 2 online quizzes a week which are really easy grade boosters and the two lowest ones are dropped. Some people I know are in honors macro and seem to be struggling on the test, but normal macro with Euzent is really easy so far.

Thanks Penguins&Otters, good to know. Is there a difference between the online class and the live one in terms of tests/work/extra credit?

It’s hard to say because I don’t know anyone in the live class, but for the online class you can still go and watch the lecture in person if you have the desire. There are probably less quizzes in a live course because the quizzes would take up a lot of lecture time, unless they are take home quizzes. Both classes would probably have the same amount of tests. My tests are always a few days after the honors class, so there’s not much of a difference. Although, it can be hard to keep up with the online lectures if you aren’t self-disciplined.

My son is taking Macroeconomics with Euzent… Its a web class and uses aplia for online homework. He is doing real well however there is alot of homework… However I dont consider that a bad thing as I believe that classes with alot of homework/assignments force you to study and ultimately more prepared for the test. Euzent allows you to redo all your aplia work up until the due date. The actual test you, the student, schedule and goto the lab to take. Its all multipe choices. For the aplia homework/quizes/assignment she has it set to average and there are a max number of tries.

In reference to the online versus in person…For Euzent there is no difference. You have an option of attending the class or watching the class online via webcast. 15% of your total grade is from the aplia quizes/assignments. My son just got finished with his second test and made an 89. For other classes that use aplia the professor can pick and choose what is required by class. I suspect they dont customize it all that much.

I would recommend this class hands down for anyone as long as they are organized enough to do everyone w/o supervision.

My son also has his match class and it uses the online study, assignment, quizes. It is face to face class and he has more homework in that class. This is why I suspect the online vs face to face doesnt make a difference.

I’m having a similar dilemma as the OP and would like to know if anyone else has an opinion o n micro vs macro.

My DD is taking Micro simply because it fits better into her schedule than Macro this spring. She has many friends at UCF who have taken both and the consensus is that they are of similar difficulty/workload. Some profs are rumored to be slightly easier than others but in general, economics is not a walk in the park.

im pretty much echoing what everyone else has said, but if you have the option to choose freely between marco and micro (meaning without schedule issues like OP’s D that makes micro the better choice) i would probably go with macro. I just took macro this semester with Euzent and its a pretty easy class that if you at least put some effort into it its an easy B class, try a teeny bit more and u can get an A. the online assignments arent hard at all, just dont leave them until the last minute lol. they really help review the material. the tests arent that bad if you either read or go to her lectures and read a little. I passed the class with an A even though near the end of the semester I didnt attend as much and just read the book a bit and did the online assignments. She tries her best to make the class interesting and she’s pretty helpful.
