Right now if I apply I’ll probably get into low or mid tiered uc’s like ucsb ucsc ucr or umerced. If I go to community college for 2 years to finish my ged then apply with a better GPA and top notch resume I definitely have a better chance to get into a top tier uc like UCB ucla or ucsd. I know a bunch of people will tell me to apply anyway because the chances of getting in are still there but I really want I weigh my options. So should I apply to get into a low or mid tiered uc or take 2 years of community college and transfer to a top tier one? My desired major has better programs at the top heir uc’s and I also plan to go to law school so any advice or tips?
I’m instate applicant.
A bit of a generalization, but the toughest part of junior college is staying motivated. They just aren’t the most motivating environments. It seems that the majority of students are there just because they think they should be, and they just kinda putter along. If UCLA, Berkeley, or SD is that important to you and you feel you can stay motivated at JC, then go that route. If you distract easily or find you are often affected by the energy of your surroundings, then you might be better served going right into a four year.
@kbj500 I think UCSB is much better than the others you mentioned. Take a look into them again. Honestly It’s hard to transfer from a community college in 2 years because they are so full of students and don’t have many professors so it’s hard to get the classes you need they’re always full and as an incoming student you enroll last!!

UCM/UCR/UCSB/UCSC Transfer Acceptance Rates to UCLA (2014-2015):
26%/23%/22%/18%
UCM/UCR/UCSB/UCSC Transfer Acceptance Rates to UCB (2014-2015):
17%/7%/15%/9%
UCM/UCR/UCSB/UCSC Transfer Acceptance Rates to UCSD (2014-2015):
79%/51%/58%/58%
From this information we can derive,
UCM/UCR/UCSB/UCSC Average Transfer Acceptance Rates to a “High Tier UC” (2014-2015):
41%/27%/32%/28%
So the total average transfer acceptance rate from a “lower tier UC” to a “high tier UC” (2014-2015) is:
32%
with your best chances from UCM.
Now for California Community Colleges:
CCC Transfer Acceptance Rate to UCLA (2014-2015):
30%
CCC Transfer Acceptance Rate to UCB (2014-2015):
24%
CCC Transfer Acceptance Rate to UCSD (2014-2015):
46%
So the total average transfer acceptance rate from a CCC to a “high tier UC” (2014-2015) is:
33%
Remember that each school is different and has different average acceptance rates to each campus, but in a very broad analysis of the data, it doesn’t matter as much whether its CCC vs UC. It matters more on the individual school.
