Seeking a list of schools that require mid-year report. Anybody? I know I can check each school’s website but given the number of schools these kids apply to, it seemed likely that somebody made a list at some point.
My kids, and all my advisees send a mid-year report to all schools. Seems to be the easiest way to go about it and many schools want one. Obviously, if the kid is already accepted or rejected, there is no need to send it. It seems sorta on the late side at this point for Mid Year Reports though.
Our HS sent them all automatically to every school on D’s list that had gotten an original transcript. I believe they went out in early January, right after the results of mid-year exams were posted.
My D’s school did the same thing- have you checked with yours?
Our school’s schedule is a little different and they have been a bit cavalier about the timing of some of these things. I see they sent a report to some schools but not others. Maybe they only sent them to the Common App schools or maybe just the ones that require it but certainly they haven’t been sent to all. There are very few college/guidance counselors and a massive student body. It’s complicated.

One: I realize every high school has a different calendar schedule. Nonetheless, I can’t imagine too many high schools having the midpoint in the year being past the end of January and it is now the end of February and colleges are in the decision phase whereby it is getting very late to send additional materials.
Two: My mantra is that nobody is going to care about your admissions process as much as the student and the parent. Even though certain other people such as rec writers and guidance counselors have tasks to do on your behalf, I would not rely 100% on assuming these things get done. Therefore, I think it behooves the student to check on what has been sent, at different important junctures along the way and keep records of these tasks and when they are confirmed and so on. This is even more important at a school where guidance counselors are assigned way too many students. You may wish to have your student double check with the GC on Monday as to what is sent and what still needs to be sent given that it will already be March.
Agreed. Even though I knew our school sent them, D went into Naviance to make sure they had been sent, and then checked the receipt of them on each of the college portals, or made calls. The fact that our school uses Naviance makes it easier because it is all electronic, but that said, checking is always the responsibility of the student. @vocal1046 - sorry your school makes it more difficult Yet one more hurdle.
Well, this is one of those instances in which a thorough reply explaining how Naviance, though very well-designed does not always a smooth process make, or even a merely scratchy and uncomfortable process, would abandon all anonymity so I will say thanks and move on.
My kids’ school did not have Naviance. For each step that involved someone else like guidance counselor or rec writers, they gave them written instructions and due dates. Then, they checked back with each person by a certain date (prior to that item’s due date) to see if they had sent whatever it was. They also checked with each school to confirm that all materials were received. Just another way to go about it. Your kid could still check with the GC on Monday if you wish.
Once again, I began to write a response that would clarify how differently one school’s counselors can function than another’s but that would scuttle anonymity. I was not seeking advice on how to get a counselor to send a document - merely a list of schools for which the mid-year report is REQUIRED. I will just check each website. No need for further suggestions.
Just when you thought it was safe- there is ALWAYS another task 8-} sorry!
vocal, I’ll throw in a suggestion anyway…On the common app website, I think you can do a quick search of schools on your list and it will tell you if mid-year and end of year transcripts are required. At least that may be one stop shopping for your schools who use common app.
I just checked and if you go to Member Colleges - Application Requirements and search your school, scroll all the way to the right and if “MR” is checked off, they will need a mid-year report.
keep deleting
@vocal1046 I know Emerson requires it. Not sure of others. If the midyear report has raised GPA I would send it to everyone bc it could mean more $ for merit scholarships
Vocal- My S’s HS experience with college application process may have been similar to what your family is experiencing. Our school district used Naviance - and some of the OTHER HSs may have even used it well - but our attempt to utilize that system, or the counselor’s experience in the field was an exercise in frustration. We were really on our own through the entire process - fortunately MT son was child #3 and the other two had attended HSs that actually understood the complete application process (for muggle students anyway). I feel your pain. It gets tiresome LOOKING for every “i” and “t”, let alone dotting and crossing them. The end is in sight. Keep breathing.
