Will Regents Scholar merit scholarships reduce any MCAP “scholarships” as well?

(They should call them as they are–need based grants, not merit scholarships like the Regents)

According to what’s posted above, it shouldn’t - eligibility is supposedly impacted only by need-based grants. But that makes no sense, does it? If you get, for example, the Jacobs engineering scholarship at UCSD, I think that covers everything - even parking fees! - so there’d be nothing left to cover with the MCS, so I can’t see how they’d award it. If need is reduced by a merit scholarship, then I’d expect the MCS to be reduced accordingly. What happens to Cal Grants when someone is awarded the Regents?

Nothing. Contrary to what you stated earlier, cal grants do not cover 100% tuition and fees. They’re about 1.5K short without the UC health insurance and about 3K short with it. A lot of students do take that coverage. Now maybe 1.5-3K is a drop in the bucket for you, but it’s a lot for many other people.

If the student is a dependent student and her parent’s income is less than 80K, blue and gold will make up the difference. If not, Regents could bridge that gap, since most of them are 1-2.5K.

The maximum amount of unemployment in CA is $450/week. That’s $1800/month.

I’m sure my calculations were wrong somewhat. But, my mom stopped receiving unemployment benefits ( she only got it for 6 months) because they said there weren’t enough funds. IF i receive a financial aid offer, can i appeal it by this information? Because I put down that she does receive the benefits

Asking same question as jae221 did in the original post–does anyone know WHEN we will hear about the middle class scholarship? My D received official notice that she was not eligible for Cal Grant awhile ago. I think I’ll call the number on the web page tomorrow and see if I can find out.

Let us know what you find out - thanks!

My D just completed the freshman year in UC Berkely and got the FA result for next year. There is no MCS grant, so I called and the reply was “sometime in Aug”. The FA website (for my D) will be updated with the amount, if there is any. However, it will affect the other grant, in my case, it is the MCAP (UCB only), as my D will has more income. So I am not expecting there is much help at all.

It will probably be around 1,000 dollars or such. Not much help…

"UC and Cal State students anticipating financial aid from the state’s new Middle Class Scholarship program are going to have to wait until September to learn how much they will receive, a top administrator said Tuesday.

As a result of the delays, most students will not be able to apply the grants to their fall-term tuition bills but will be able to use the entire year’s amount for their winter and spring tabs."
